Description
2000 Honda XR70R A Museum-Quality Original Survivor from Private Collection
Ladies and gentlemen, feast your eyes on one of the finest original Honda XR70Rs you're likely to find anywhere in the country.
This stunning XR70R comes directly from the late Jeff Cyr Collection. Jeff was a lifelong Honda enthusiast, accomplished motocross and off-road racer, and a highly respected mechanic whom I had the privilege of knowing for decades. We worked at the same Honda dealership, Mickey Finn's Honda, back in the late 1980s. Sadly, Jeff passed away last year, and we were honored to purchase his collection of vintage Hondas from his family.
Of all the motorcycles in his collection, one thing stood out immediately: Jeff always bought the best examples available. He was still actively working and hadn't gotten around to restoring many of them, but he carefully collected exceptionally low-hour, highly original motorcycles. This XR70R is a perfect example of that philosophy.
Take a close look at the photos and you'll quickly realize this isn't your average XR70.

Finding a mint 26-year-old XR70 with this level of originality is almost unheard of.
Why the XR70R Is Legendary
The Honda XR70R is one of the most beloved minibikes ever built.
Powered by Honda's legendary horizontal single-cylinder four-stroke engine and featuring a bulletproof 3-speed semi-automatic transmission, this motorcycle helped launch the adult pit bike craze years before it became popular.
There is no clutch to operate, making it easy for beginners, yet it is endlessly entertaining for experienced riders. The engine design became so successful that virtually every Chinese motorcycle manufacturer copied it. These bikes are famous for their reliability, simplicity, and ability to run virtually forever with basic maintenance.
They're fun, easy to ride, easy to own, and they put a smile on your face every single time you throw a leg over one.
Mechanical Restoration & Service
Although this XR70 was already an outstanding original motorcycle, we couldn't resist taking it to the next level.
The fuel system was completely serviced:
-
Fuel tank removed and thoroughly cleaned
-
Interior flushed and cleaned with Zep cleaner and hot water
-
Carburetor removed, cleaned, and rebuilt
-
Jets cleaned and inspected
-
New fuel petcock installed
-
New fuel line installed
-
New fuel drain lines installed
-
New air filter installed
-
Intake boot resealed
-
New spark plug installed
-
Throttle cable adjusted
We also installed:
-
Brand-new tires
-
New gold drive chain
Those are the only non-original cosmetic items on the motorcycle besides routine consumables.
Cosmetic Restoration
After mechanical servicing, the XR70 was sent through our detail department where it received a professional cosmetic rotisserie detail & restoration.
Work included:
-
Complete power wash and steam cleaning
-
Exhaust system removed, refinished, and repainted
-
Rear brake pedal refinished
-
Footpegs removed and refinished
-
Shift lever refinished
-
Handlebars refinished
-
Kickstand refinished
-
Engine side covers refinished using correct Honda paint colors
-
Frame paint professionally touched up where necessary
-
Plastics carefully polished and preserved
-
Chrome polished throughout
-
Wheels detailed and restored
-
Motorcycle fully reassembled and inspected
Special care was taken to preserve the original factory graphics and decals. We intentionally avoided replacing components that would diminish the authenticity of this remarkable survivor.
Compression & Engine Inspection
Compression tested at:
145 PSI
Additionally, a borescope inspection was performed through the spark plug hole.
The results confirmed exactly what the condition of the motorcycle suggests:
-
Original cylinder crosshatch still visible
-
Minimal carbon buildup
-
Extremely low wear
-
Evidence of very low operating hours
This is one of the lowest-hour original XR70Rs we've encountered in years.
Cost of Restoration
We invested:
-
20 Hours Shop Labor @ $150/hr = $3,000
-
Parts & Materials = $305
Total Restoration Investment: $3,305
That figure does not include the cost of purchasing the motorcycle or transportation.
Some people may think it's crazy to put this much effort into an XR70. Maybe they're right.
But that's what we do.
At Kaplan Cycles, we don't simply sell motorcycles—we preserve motorcycle history. Whether it's a CR500, CT70, MB5, XL80, or XR70R, we take tremendous pride in bringing iconic machines back to the condition they deserve.
