THIS UNIT HAS SOLD AND IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE.

Description

1986 YAMAHA BW80 BIG WHEEL – ORIGINAL SURVIVOR – 150 PSI COMPRESSION – 2-STROKE CLASSIC – FULLY SERVICED!

RARE, ORIGINAL YAMAHA BW80 BIG WHEEL – PRESERVED, SERVICED & READY TO RIDE!

Feast your eyes on this awesome Yamaha BW80 Big Wheel! This is one of the coolest little two-strokes Yamaha ever built, and finding one in this kind of original, unrestored condition is becoming increasingly difficult.

The Yamaha BW80 has earned a legendary reputation for being virtually bulletproof, incredibly fun to ride, and capable of tackling terrain that would stop an ordinary minibike in its tracks. With its oversized balloon-style tires, lightweight chassis, and unmistakable monster-truck appearance, this little Yamaha is just as entertaining today as it was when it rolled off the showroom floor four decades ago.

This particular example is an exceptionally well-preserved original survivor, retaining its original fuel tank, seat, plastics, tires, and major factory components. Aside from a new gold drive chain, replacement tank graphics, routine servicing, and selective cosmetic refinishing, this motorcycle remains remarkably original.

Most BW80s were purchased for kids, ridden hard, crashed, neglected, and eventually worn out. Very few survived in this condition. Finding one that doesn't require a complete frame-off restoration is becoming a serious challenge.

And the best part? This one runs every bit as good as it looks!

ORIGINAL ENGINE – 150 PSI COMPRESSION!

One of the most impressive things about this BW80 is the condition of its original two-stroke engine.

Our technicians performed a compression test, and this little Yamaha pumped out an impressive 150 PSI on its original piston!

That's an excellent reading and a strong indication that this engine has been well preserved.

Unlike so many vintage minibikes that have been rebuilt numerous times or are suffering from worn-out top ends, this BW80 retains its original engine internals and delivers excellent compression.

It starts, runs, and rides beautifully.

We spent several days riding and testing this machine, and what an absolute blast it is! It's the kind of motorcycle that reminds you why you fell in love with riding in the first place.

BIG WHEELS, BIG FUN!

What makes the Yamaha BW80 so special is its unique combination of simplicity, ruggedness, and go-anywhere capability.

Those enormous tires give it an unmistakable miniature monster-truck appearance while providing excellent flotation and traction on a wide variety of surfaces.

Sand? No problem.

Snow? Bring it on.

Trails, fields, dirt roads, and backyard adventures? That's exactly what this little machine was designed for.

The BW80 was designed as a youth-friendly recreational motorcycle, but don't let its small displacement fool you. This little two-stroke is an absolute riot, even for an adult rider.

Its three-speed semi-automatic transmission eliminates the need to operate a manual clutch, making it easy for less-experienced riders to enjoy.

And thanks to Yamaha's automatic two-stroke oil-injection system, there's no need to premix gasoline and oil. Simply maintain the fuel and injection-oil supplies, kick it over, and enjoy!

COMPLETE MECHANICAL SERVICE BY KAPLAN CYCLES

Our experienced technicians thoroughly inspected, serviced, tuned, and road-tested this motorcycle to make sure it performs as well as possible.

Mechanical work performed includes:

  • Compression tested – excellent 150 PSI reading

  • Original piston and engine internals retained

  • Carburetor cleaned and serviced

  • Carburetor rejetted to correct a lean-running condition

  • Air filter cleaned and serviced

  • Airbox thoroughly cleaned

  • Transmission gear oil changed

  • Fresh VP ethanol-free gasoline added

  • Factory two-stroke oil-injection pump inspected and verified operational

  • New gold drive chain installed

  • Comprehensive 100-point inspection performed

  • Engine started, tested, and evaluated

  • Extensive riding and operational testing completed

The result is a fantastic-running vintage Yamaha that has been properly inspected and prepared for its next owner.

PROFESSIONAL COSMETIC PRESERVATION – NOT A FRAME-OFF RESTORATION!

We want to emphasize something important about this motorcycle: This is an original survivor, not a fully restored bike.

And that's exactly what makes it special.

Rather than tearing apart a beautifully preserved motorcycle and replacing its original components, our team performed what we call a cosmetic preservation service.

The goal was to improve its appearance while retaining as much of its original character as possible.

Cosmetic preservation work included:

  • Fork lowers professionally refinished

  • Original wheels cosmetically refinished

  • Engine covers and cases cosmetically touched up and refinished

  • Exhaust system refinished

  • Swingarm selectively touched up

  • Brake lever refinished

  • New factory-style fuel tank graphics installed

  • Motorcycle thoroughly washed and steam cleaned

  • Engine, chassis, and undercarriage carefully detailed

  • Original plastics cleaned and preserved

  • Original seat and fuel tank retained

  • Complete top-to-bottom cosmetic detailing

The finished product has a beautiful vintage appearance without losing the authenticity and character that collectors appreciate.

ORIGINALITY THAT'S BECOMING HARD TO FIND

This motorcycle still retains an impressive collection of its factory-installed components, including:

  • Original fuel tank

  • Original seat

  • Original plastic bodywork

  • Original front and rear tires

  • Original engine and piston

  • Original chassis and major running gear

  • Original Yamaha two-stroke oil-injection system

These are the details that make an unrestored survivor so desirable.

When you're dealing with a motorcycle approaching four decades of age, originality matters.

HONEST CONDITION DISCLOSURE

We believe in accurately representing the motorcycles we sell.

This Yamaha BW80 is in excellent survivor condition for its age, but it is not a flawless, concours-level restoration.

There is some minor cosmetic patina consistent with the motorcycle's age.

The original white fuel tank has developed some light discoloration and fading over the years. The front fender has a few scratches, and there are several minor cosmetic marks and blemishes around the motorcycle.

These are the normal beauty marks of a vintage machine that has survived decades without being completely restored.

We elected to preserve its originality rather than replace otherwise serviceable factory components.

If you're looking for a beautiful original survivor that runs great, presents extremely well, and still carries its authentic Yamaha character, this BW80 checks all the boxes.

A GROWING COLLECTOR MARKET FOR YAMAHA BIG WHEELS

The vintage Yamaha Big Wheel family has developed an enthusiastic following among collectors, enthusiasts, and riders who remember these incredible machines from their youth.

The BW80, BW200, and BW350 are some of the most recognizable recreational motorcycles of their era.

Their unique appearance, rugged construction, simple mechanical design, and nostalgic appeal make them increasingly desirable.

Most examples were used hard and eventually discarded, making well-preserved originals increasingly difficult to locate.

We also have Yamaha BW200 and BW350 Big Wheels in our collection that will be offered for sale, so be sure to watch our upcoming listings.

This BW80 represents an excellent opportunity to own an authentic piece of Yamaha off-road history.
