Description

1987 KAWASAKI KX500

 Tom Morgan Racing Engine

Works Replica – 16K Frame-Off Restoration

 No Expense Spared

This is a meticulously crafted, frame-off restoration built around a remarkably original, low-hour motorcycle and elevated to a level approaching what a privateer factory-supported racer would have campaigned in the late 1980s & 90's.

This is the definition of a works replica.

For those unfamiliar with the term, a works bike is a motorcycle prepared to factory race-team standards. Every component is inspected, upgraded, refined, and assembled with one goal in mind: maximum performance and reliability.

This KX500 embodies that philosophy from front to rear.

The Foundation Matters

The biggest mistake people make when restoring vintage motocross bikes is starting with the wrong motorcycle.

This one started with an exceptional survivor.

The frame rails are absolutely pristine.

The engine cases are remarkably clean and undamaged.

The original suspension components are straight and intact.

Even the original factory expansion chamber remains in extraordinary condition.

Anyone who raced a KX500 knows that one weekend getting roosted by a field of 500's could leave a pipe looking like it survived a war zone. The condition of the original pipe alone tells you this machine lived a very different life than most KX500s.

Finding a donor bike this clean is nearly impossible today.

That's why it was worthy of the investment that followed.

Tom Morgan Racing Engine Build

At the heart of this monster sits what may very well be one of the finest KX500 engines in existence.

The motor was sent to legendary engine builder Tom Morgan Racing for a complete crankshaft-up works-level build.

For serious two-stroke enthusiasts, Tom Morgan needs no introduction.

A certified mechanical engineer and former Kawasaki factory mechanic, Tom Morgan is widely regarded as one of the premier two-stroke engine builders in America. His engines have powered championship-winning motorcycles for decades and are known for combining incredible power with exceptional reliability.

Included with the motorcycle is Tom Morgan's complete documentation package, detailing every specification, modification, and setup recommendation.

The engine received a 512CC Full Crank up Rebuild:

• Complete crankshaft rebuild and balancing
• New crank bearings and seals
• New piston and ring assembly
• Cylinder welding and replating
• Transmission gear machining and blueprinting
• Case repairs and reinforcement machining
• Modified cylinder head for 2004-style piston configuration
• Integrated decompression system
• TMR MX2 porting package
• Rear engine mount reinforcement
• Two-piece TMR clutch cover conversion & New Clutch
• Powder-coated engine finish
• Complete blueprint assembly

The Tom Morgan Racing invoice alone totaled $4,758.

That figure does not include shipping, intake components, exhaust system, paint & restoration labor, or installation.

Most importantly, the bike runs exactly the way a professionally built KX500 should.

The power is enormous yet surprisingly controllable.

Thanks to Kawasaki's legendary KIPS power-valve system and Tom Morgan's tuning expertise, the engine delivers strong power right off idle and pulls relentlessly all the way through the rev range.

Many riders consider the KX500 the greatest off-road two-stroke ever built.

After riding this one, it's easy to understand why.

Millar Race Engineering Upgrades

The intake system received premium Millar Race Engineering upgrades including:

• Keihin PWK39 Long Body Air Striker carburetor
• Millar Stick modification
• Intake spacer package
• New Performance V-Force Reed Valve system
• Custom race jetting

The result is razor-sharp throttle response and exceptional rideability.

No Expense Spared Chassis Restoration

The motorcycle was completely disassembled down to the last nut and bolt.

Every component was evaluated.

Anything that wasn't perfect was repaired, rebuilt, refinished, or replaced.

In fact, a detailed inspection identified 49 separate areas requiring improvement, and every single one was addressed.

The frame was professionally powder coated.

The triple clamps were powder coated to match.

The restoration includes:

• New steering stem bearings
• Complete fork rebuild
• New seals
• New springs
• New fork oil
• Refinished fork lowers
• New front fender
• New graphics package
• New cable guides
• New Renthal handlebars
• New Renthal mounts
• New Renthal pad
• New clutch cable
• New controls and levers
• New grips

Premium Wheels & Brakes

The wheels were built using top-tier components throughout.

Features include:

• Excel Takasago A60 rims front and rear
• Buchanan Bulldog stainless spokes
• Vapor-honed hubs & New Wheel bearings
• Cerakoted hub finish
• New Dunlop tires
• New tubes and rim strips

The braking system was completely rebuilt:

• New front rotor
• Rebuilt calipers
• New brake pads
• Stainless braided brake lines
• Rebuilt master cylinders

Everything functions exactly as it should.

Rear Suspension & Linkage

The rear suspension received the same level of attention.

Highlights include:

• Complete shock rebuild  (*Shock Shaft has pitting and can be rechromed or replaced if needed)
• New shock bumper
• New spring components
• New linkage bearings and bushings
• Unobtanium Rare Emig Racing MX works linkage upgrade
• New chain guide
• New chain rollers
• New axle hardware

The New Emig Racing linkage alone is impossible to source today.

Details That Separate Good From Great

What truly sets this KX500 apart are the details.

The original fuel tank was painstakingly restored through multiple stages of wet sanding and polishing.

The original radiators remain intact and straight, a rarity on any vintage motocross bike.

New radiator guards, hoses, hardware, cap, and drain components were installed.

The seat features new foam and cover.

The side panels, front & rear fenders, and number plates are all new.

The frame is immaculate.

The original foot pegs remain in nearly new condition.

The swingarm is exceptionally clean.

Even the smallest details received attention, including custom drilled works-style washers, premium hardware and Tom Morgan Racing CNC-machined components.

Investment & Value

The numbers tell the story:

Tom Morgan Racing Engine Build: $4,758

Additional Parts, Powder Coating, Components, Wheels, Suspension, Brakes, and Restoration Materials: $3,500+

Professional Shop Labor 50 hours @ $150 per hour: $7,500

Total investment exceeds $15,750 before accounting for the value of the original low-hour donor motorcycle.

And that's assuming you could even find another donor bike this clean.
