Description

1986 HONDA TR200 FAT CAT – MUSEUM-QUALITY ORIGINAL SURVIVOR – ELECTRIC START – EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION – FULLY SERVICED!

RARE 1986 HONDA TR200 FAT CAT – INCREDIBLY PRESERVED ORIGINAL SURVIVOR – ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES WE'VE EVER SEEN!

Feast your eyes on this absolutely spectacular 1986 Honda TR200 Fat Cat, an exceptionally well-preserved, highly collectible vintage Honda that looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor!

Now celebrating four decades since its introduction, this legendary Honda Fat Cat is an outstanding example of Honda's innovative engineering and one of the cleanest, lowest-use examples we have ever had the privilege of offering here at Kaplan Cycles and the New England Motorcycle Museum.

THIS IS NOT A RESTORATION. THIS IS AN INCREDIBLY WELL-PRESERVED ORIGINAL SURVIVOR!

Finding a nearly 40-year-old off-road motorcycle in this condition is almost unheard of. Most Honda Fat Cats were purchased to be ridden hard, enjoyed by kids and adults alike, and subjected to decades of off-road use. Consequently, surviving examples typically exhibit heavily scratched plastics, worn seats, damaged components, and substantial wear to the chassis and engine.

NOT THIS ONE!

This TR200 is an absolute time capsule, displaying a remarkable level of originality and preservation that must be seen to be appreciated.

EXCEPTIONAL ORIGINAL CONDITION

This magnificent Fat Cat retains an extraordinary amount of its original factory equipment, including:

  • Original Honda factory plastics in spectacular condition

  • Original factory seat cover, beautifully preserved

  • Original handlebars

  • Original footpegs

  • Original kickstand

  • Original rear sprocket

  • Original major chassis and cycle components

  • Original-style Honda lighting and electrical equipment

  • Beautifully preserved engine cases and undercarriage

  • Exceptionally clean frame, suspension, and chassis

Even the underside of the engine is remarkably pristine, showing virtually none of the typical evidence associated with extensive off-road riding.

The condition strongly suggests this motorcycle has seen exceptionally little use, particularly off-road.

The tires are Dunlops and appear potentially original to the motorcycle, although we have not been able to conclusively verify their production dates. Regardless, their condition complements the remarkable preservation of the rest of the machine.

This is precisely the kind of original vintage Honda that collectors spend years searching for.

FULLY SERVICED – RUNS AND RIDES BEAUTIFULLY!

Unlike many vintage motorcycles that have spent years sitting in garages or collections and require extensive mechanical recommissioning, this Fat Cat has just received a comprehensive mechanical service from our professional motorcycle technicians.

RECENT MECHANICAL SERVICE INCLUDES:

  • Engine oil changed

  • Brand-new air filter installed

  • Carburetor cleaned and rebuilt

  • Brand-new battery installed

  • Fuel and induction systems serviced

  • Starting and running operation checked

  • General mechanical inspection and operational testing

THE RESULT?

This Fat Cat fires right up with its factory electric starter, idles beautifully, and runs exceptionally smoothly.

The engine is quiet, responsive, and buttery smooth, just as you would expect from one of Honda's legendary four-stroke powerplants.

The motorcycle is an absolute pleasure to operate, combining Honda's renowned reliability with one of the most unique riding experiences ever offered in a production motorcycle.

LEGENDARY HONDA FAT CAT ENGINEERING

The Honda TR200 Fat Cat was produced during an unforgettable era when Honda was pushing the boundaries of recreational motorcycle design.

Featuring massive balloon-style tires, a comfortable riding position, and a user-friendly automatic-clutch transmission, the Fat Cat quickly developed a loyal following.

FACTORY FEATURES INCLUDE:

  • 199cc air-cooled four-stroke single-cylinder Honda engine

  • Electric starting system

  • Five-speed semi-automatic transmission

  • Automatic centrifugal clutch – no hand-operated clutch lever required

  • Oversized, wide-profile tires

  • Keyed ignition

  • Headlight with high- and low-beam settings

  • Rugged Honda chassis and suspension

  • Low, approachable seat height

  • Honda's legendary four-stroke reliability

The automatic clutch makes this motorcycle particularly enjoyable. Riders can select gears using the foot shifter without having to operate a conventional hand clutch.

The lever on the left handlebar operates a brake rather than a clutch, providing an easy-to-manage riding experience.

Its wide tires provide excellent flotation and a unique feel on appropriate recreational terrain.

For someone learning to ride, the absence of a conventional hand clutch eliminates one of the more challenging aspects of learning motorcycle operation.

And for experienced riders, the Fat Cat delivers a tremendous amount of nostalgic fun!

TASTEFUL UPGRADES

While the overwhelming majority of this Honda remains original, it has received a few thoughtful additions:

  • Passenger footpegs – aftermarket accessory

  • Rearview mirrors – convenient addition

  • Gold drive chain – attractive appearance and excellent complement to the bike's classic Honda styling

These additions enhance the motorcycle's usability and presentation without detracting significantly from its outstanding original character.

Please note that the addition of passenger footpegs does not change the motorcycle's factory intended seating capacity or load rating.

WHY ORIGINAL CONDITION MATTERS

At Kaplan Cycles, we have restored, serviced, and sold countless vintage Japanese motorcycles, including numerous Honda Fat Cats.

We know firsthand what it takes to bring a heavily used example back to this level of presentation.

Most surviving TR200s have spent decades being ridden off-road. By the time they reach our restoration department, they often require complete disassembly, frame refinishing, engine detailing, replacement plastics, suspension work, mechanical rebuilding, and extensive cosmetic restoration.

A comprehensive restoration can easily consume 80 to 100 hours of professional labor, with significant additional costs for hard-to-find original components.

At a professional shop rate of $150 per hour, 100 hours of labor alone represents $15,000 before parts.

And even after that investment, a restored motorcycle is still not the same as an exceptionally preserved original.

YOU CAN RESTORE A WORN-OUT MOTORCYCLE, BUT YOU CANNOT RECREATE FOUR DECADES OF ORIGINAL PRESERVATION!

That is what makes this particular Honda so special.

Its original seat, plastics, chassis components, engine cases, and overall condition tell the story of a machine that has been remarkably well cared for throughout its life.

A TRUE COLLECTOR'S PIECE

The 1986 Honda TR200 Fat Cat is an increasingly desirable machine among collectors of vintage Honda motorcycles, classic trail bikes, and 1980s Japanese powersports equipment.

Its distinctive styling, oversized tires, limited production era, and unmistakable appearance make it one of Honda's most recognizable recreational motorcycles.

Whether you're building a museum-quality vintage Honda collection, searching for the Fat Cat you remember from your youth, or simply want an exceptionally clean and mechanically sorted vintage trail machine, this example deserves serious consideration.

This is the kind of motorcycle that can become the centerpiece of a vintage Honda collection.

ORIGINALITY. CONDITION. MECHANICAL EXCELLENCE. COLLECTIBILITY.

This 1986 Honda TR200 Fat Cat checks all the boxes.
