Description

1985 HONDA XL80S – Museum Quality Original Survivor – 2,681 Original Miles – From the Jeff Cyr Collection

Back in 1984, I had just graduated high school and was working at Mickey Finn's Honda, helping unload and prep brand-new Hondas exactly like this XL80S. More than four decades later, I can honestly say this is the finest original Honda XL80S I have seen since those days.

This stunning XL80S comes from the legendary Jeff Cyr Collection. Jeff spent over 20 years running the parts department at Mickey Finn's Honda and dedicated his life to collecting some of the finest original Honda motorcycles imaginable. His collection included pristine examples of the MB5, XR70R, CT70, and dozens of other highly desirable Hondas.

Sadly, Jeff passed away last year, but his legacy lives on through the motorcycles he preserved. His brother Tim entrusted us with many of Jeff's treasured bikes, knowing we would restore and preserve them correctly.

This XL80S is one of the crown jewels of that collection.

A Spectacular Original Survivor

Finding a 40-plus-year-old XL80S is difficult.

Finding one with:

  • Only 2,681 original miles

  • Original paint

  • Original plastics

  • Original seat cover

  • Original Honda grips

  • Original reflectors

  • Original turn signals

  • Original warning label still on the fuel tank

  • Original tires

is nearly impossible.

Most XL80S models were purchased by teenagers, ridden hard, and eventually worn out. This one spent its life in the hands of a meticulous collector and survives today as a remarkable piece of Honda history.

The only non-original component on the motorcycle is a brand-new gold chain that we installed during servicing.

Comprehensive Preservation Restoration

Mechanically, Jeff maintained the bike exceptionally well. Because it spent much of the last 35 years in storage, we performed a thorough preservation service to return it to show-quality condition while maintaining its originality.

Mechanical Preservation Service Included:

  • New Battery

  • Fuel tank drained and cleaned

  • Fuel petcock serviced

  • New fuel lines installed

  • Carburetor completely disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt

  • New spark plug installed

  • New air filter installed

  • New headlight & bulb

  • New air filter

  • New Ignition Cover Gasket

  • New Gold Chain

  • New Instrument Cluster Bulbs

  • New 10/40 Engine oil

  • New Countershaft Sprocket Seal

  • New Shifter Shaft Seal

  • Fresh ethanol-free fuel added

  • Complete operational inspection performed

Everything works exactly as it should:

  • High beam

  • Low beam

  • Turn signals

  • Horn

  • Switchgear

  • Controls

The motorcycle starts easily, idles smoothly, shifts perfectly, and runs exactly as a new Honda XL80S should.

53 Hours Shop labor Invested; 6 Hours Mechanical & 47 Hours of Cosmetic Preservation

To elevate this bike to museum-quality presentation, our restoration team invested over 47 hours in careful cleaning, detailing, refinishing, and preservation work.

Highlights include:

  • Wheels removed and vapor honed

  • Exhaust removed, refinished, and detailed

  • Exhaust shield refinished in correct semi-gloss finish

  • Kickstand refinished

  • Footpegs refinished

  • Chain guard refinished

  • Rear brake hub refinished

  • Rear Brake lever refinished

  • Engine side covers refinished

  • Shifter refinished

  • Kickstarter refinished

  • Swingarm paint professionally touched up using correct Honda color

  • Frame paint professionally detailed, polished, and preserved

  • Fork lowers polished to original factory appearance

  • Wheel hubs detailed and restored

  • Entire motorcycle steam cleaned and degreased

  • Engine cleaned top to bottom

The bottom of the engine is as clean as the top. The skid plate and lower engine areas show clear evidence that this motorcycle has lived an exceptionally pampered life.

Originality Matters

What makes this motorcycle truly special is what wasn't restored.

The following components remain original:

  • Fuel tank paint

  • Seat cover

  • Front fender

  • Side panels

  • Side number plates

  • Plastics

  • Chrome

  • Frame paint

  • Warning decals

  • Reflectors

  • Grips

This is not a heavily restored motorcycle attempting to look original.

This is an extraordinarily original motorcycle that has been carefully preserved.

Investment Quality Example

The total preservation and service work performed on this motorcycle totaled:

  • 53 labor hours @ $150 PH = $7950 Plus $201 in New Parts

  • $8,151 Was just invested in servicing and preservation

  • Plus acquisition and transportation costs

The result is one of the finest surviving Honda XL80S motorcycles in existence.

It runs beautifully.

It looks spectacular.

It presents exactly as a collector-grade Honda should.

Why Buy This XL80S?

Because you may never find another one like it.

This is the kind of motorcycle that belongs in a serious Honda collection, museum, or climate-controlled private display. It represents a time capsule from Honda's golden era of small-displacement dual-sport motorcycles.
