Description
1984 HONDA XR350R
RARE MINT ORIGINAL SHOWROOM CONDITION
MUSEUM QUALITY
JUST FULLY SERVICED, TUNED & DETAILED TO PERFECTION
Exceptionally rare, low-hour original survivor that has just undergone an extensive preservation, cosmetic restoration, and mechanical service totaling nearly $6,000.
Finding an XR350R from this era is one thing. Finding one retaining this level of original equipment, original finishes, factory decals, hardware, and remarkably unworn chassis components is something entirely different.
Most XR-series Hondas were purchased to do exactly what Honda designed them for — they were ridden hard through trails, mud, rocks, woods, and motocross terrain until they were simply worn out. This example clearly lived a very different life. It has been adult-owned, carefully maintained, stored indoors, and preserved for more than four decades.
At 42 years old, the condition of this motorcycle is remarkable.
INCREDIBLE ORIGINALITY
This XR350R retains an impressive amount of its original factory equipment, including:
-
Original front and rear fenders
-
Original side number plates
-
Original fuel tank
-
Original seat
-
Original exhaust system
-
Original factory tool pouch
-
Original speedometer and odometer
-
Original shock and shock spring
-
Original sprocket
-
Original chain guard
-
Original swingarm decals
-
Original muffler/EPA decals
-
Original frame paint through the majority of the chassis
-
Original hardware and fasteners throughout
-
Original “Off-Road Use Only” decal
-
Original fuel-tank drain tube and retaining clip
Even details normally destroyed by decades of use remain exceptional.
Look closely around the steering head and triple-clamp area. On most surviving off-road motorcycles, the control cables have rubbed through the paint and marked the VIN area after years of riding. On this machine, those areas remain extraordinarily clean.
The frame rails are equally impressive. Aside from minor professional touch-up where appropriate, the chassis shows remarkably little evidence of the punishment normally associated with a vintage XR.
OVER $6,000 INVESTED
Our technicians spent 38.5 labor hours going through this motorcycle from top to bottom.
At our current shop labor rate of $150 per hour, labor alone represents:
38.5 Hours × $150 = $5,775
Approximately $300 in parts were also installed.
That puts the total investment into its preservation and servicing at approximately $6,000.
This wasn't simply washed and placed on the showroom floor. Our crew spent an entire workweek carefully servicing, preserving, detailing, refinishing, and dialing this XR350R into the condition you see today.
COMPLETE FUEL SYSTEM SERVICE
The fuel system was thoroughly serviced, including:
-
Fuel tank flushed and cleaned
-
New fuel petcock
-
New fuel lines
-
Carburetors completely rebuilt
-
Carburetors tuned
-
New air filter
-
Fresh VP fuel
The motorcycle runs, and performs exactly as a properly sorted XR350R should.
ENGINE & MECHANICAL SERVICE
The engine received a major service and cosmetic preservation treatment, including:
-
New spark plug
-
Fresh engine oil
-
Major tune-up
-
Engine steam cleaned
-
Engine hand washed and detailed
-
Engine side covers professionally refinished
-
Cylinder professionally refinished
-
Engine cases cosmetically restored
-
New exhaust gaskets
The engine presents exceptionally well and looks New.
ORIGINAL EXHAUST SYSTEM RESTORED
One of the highlights of this motorcycle is the original factory exhaust system, which remains in excellent condition.
The complete exhaust was removed and professionally refinished using the proper factory-style finishes:
-
Exhaust pipes refinished in flat black
-
Heat shield refinished in semi-gloss
-
New exhaust gaskets installed
-
Original muffler identification/EPA decal retained
Original exhaust systems on vintage off-road Hondas were commonly dented, rusted, modified, or discarded decades ago. Having the original system intact and this well preserved is another important indicator of the life this bike has lived.
NEW BRIDGESTONE ENDURO TIRES
The motorcycle received brand-new Bridgestone Enduro tires front and rear.
Front:
-
New Bridgestone tire
-
New inner tube
-
New rim strip
Rear:
-
New Bridgestone tire
-
New inner tube
-
New rim strip
The tire still has the molding hairs on it.
BRAKE SERVICE
The braking system was serviced and prepared for use, including:
-
Front brake serviced
-
Brake fluid flushed
-
New brake pads installed
-
Braking system inspected and adjusted
DRIVE SYSTEM
The original sprocket remains in excellent condition and shows remarkably little wear.
A brand-new gold drive chain was installed.
The surrounding original components — including the chain guard, swingarm, hardware, and factory decals — remain exceptionally well preserved.
CHASSIS DETAILING
Our restoration and detailing work also included refinishing or restoring numerous chassis components:
-
Kickstand refinished
-
Footpegs refinished
-
Shifter refinished
-
Chain protector refinished
-
Frame rails professionally touched up where necessary
-
Wheels cleaned and polished
-
Original plastics cleaned and polished
The original swingarm decals remain intact and extremely clean.
Even the original decal on the rear shock is still present.
These are the small details that separate an ordinary restored motorcycle from an exceptional original survivor.
FUEL TANK PRESERVATION
The original fuel tank underwent our labor-intensive restoration process.
Rather than simply painting over the original tank, we carefully sanded, polished, and buffed the original material to bring back its original factory appearance.
This process alone required over 6 hours of skilled labor.
COCKPIT & CONTROLS
- Functional speedometer
-
Functional odometer
-
Working headlight on/off switch
-
New grips
-
New handlebars
-
Master-cylinder protector
-
Excellent original switchgear
-
Clean original mounting hardware
The master-cylinder protector is a period aftermarket accessory and looks perfectly at home on the motorcycle.
ORIGINAL FACTORY TOOL POUCH
The original rear factory tool pouch is still present and remains in outstanding condition.
This is another component frequently missing from vintage off-road motorcycles and another indication of how carefully this machine was preserved.
AN EXTRAORDINARY SURVIVOR
The more time you spend looking at this XR350R, the more impressive it becomes.
The frame rails are exceptionally clean.
The original decals remain intact.
The original fasteners haven't been repeatedly rounded off by decades of repairs.
The original sprocket remains excellent.
The original exhaust survives.
The original plastics survive.
The original seat survives.
The original gauges work.
The original frame paint remains remarkably well preserved.
Those aren't characteristics you normally find on a 42-year-old Honda trail bike.
Most XR350Rs were ridden hard and ultimately consumed doing exactly what they were designed to do. This one somehow escaped that fate.
After more than four decades, it has now been professionally preserved and serviced by Kaplan Cycles and is ready for its next caretaker.
COLLECTOR QUALITY
Vintage Japanese off-road motorcycles in exceptional original condition continue to become increasingly difficult to find.
Restored motorcycles can always be created — but you cannot recreate decades of carefully preserved original parts, factory decals, hardware, chassis components, and the unmistakable character of a genuine survivor.
Whether you're looking for an investment-grade addition to a Honda collection, a centerpiece for a motorcycle museum, or simply one of the nicest XR350Rs you're likely to encounter, this motorcycle deserves serious consideration.
You will have a very difficult time finding another 1984 Honda XR350R preserved to this level.
