1983 HONDA CR125R ELSINORE – $25,000 FRAME-OFF RESTORATION – 107 HOURS OF LABOR – FULL ENGINE & SUSPENSION REBUILD – MUSEUM-QUALITY CLASSIC!

RARE 1983 HONDA CR125R – COMPLETE NUT-AND-BOLT RESTORATION

Feast your eyes on one of the most spectacular vintage Honda CR125R restorations we've ever completed;

This is a rare opportunity to own an exceptionally restored 1983 Honda CR125R, The legendary 2-stroke motocross machine that represents an unforgettable era in Honda racing history.

This is officially the most expensive CR125 restoration we've ever performed here at Kaplan Cycles.

We've restored countless vintage Honda CRs over the years, including numerous 1984,1985, 1986, and later models, but we've never taken a 1983 CR125R to this extraordinary level.

What initially appeared to be a relatively straightforward restoration turned into an all-out, no-expense-spared, frame-off rebuild involving three of our leading technicians, a suspension specialist, and more than 100 hours of professional labor.

The finished product is absolutely breathtaking.

And here's the best part: It doesn't just look like a factory works racer. It runs like one!

This little 125 absolutely RIPS!

With its lightweight chassis, explosive two-stroke power delivery, completely rebuilt engine, race-prepared suspension, and beautifully restored components, it's a reminder of just how phenomenal these early Honda CR motocross machines were.

This was a labor of love, built exactly the way I wanted it, without regard to whether the restoration costs could ever be recovered.

OVER $25,000 INVESTED IN THE RESTORATION!

Let's talk numbers, because they tell an incredible story.

  • 107 hours of professional shop labor

  • $195 per hour – our current shop rate

  • $20,865 in professional labor

  • Over $4,000 invested in restoration parts

  • Total documented restoration investment: over $24,865

  • excluding the original motorcycle acquisition cost and my personal management time

Additionally, our restoration records document 54 hours of cosmetic and detail restoration work, covering painstaking component refinishing, polishing, preparation, and assembly. The 107-hour restoration total reflects the extraordinary amount of labor dedicated to this build.

The labor alone exceeds what many people would spend purchasing an excellent vintage motocross bike.

And this doesn't include my personal time sourcing the motorcycle, locating discontinued components, ordering parts, meeting with technicians, directing the restoration, inspecting the work, and overseeing the build from beginning to end.

Simply put, you could not economically duplicate this motorcycle for what we expect it to sell for.

This is the kind of restoration that makes sense only when the person commissioning it has a genuine passion for these machines.

We do.

And it shows everywhere you look.

COMPLETE ENGINE REBUILD – CRANKCASES SPLIT – NOTHING OVERLOOKED!

The heart of this incredible machine is its fully rebuilt liquid-cooled Honda 125cc two-stroke racing engine.

We didn't simply install a piston, clean the carburetor, and call it a restoration.

The engine was completely dismantled, the crankcases were split, and the internal components were comprehensively rebuilt.

Engine restoration includes:

  • Original Honda crankcases completely disassembled and inspected

  • Original engine cases vapor-honed, professionally refinished, and repainted

  • Completely rebuilt crankshaft

  • New crankshaft connecting rod

  • Brand-new crankshaft main bearings

  • New crankshaft seals

  • New piston and piston rings

  • New wrist-pin/top-end bearing

  • New cylinder base gasket

  • New cylinder head gasket

  • New reed valves

  • New OEM Honda NOS transmission bearings

  • Transmission inspected and rebuilt as required

  • New clutch basket

  • New clutch plates

  • New clutch springs

  • New kickstarter shaft seal

  • New shifter shaft seal

  • New internal engine seals and gaskets

  • Original engine hardware replaced or professionally restored

  • Original clutch and water-pump covers refinished

  • Restored original kickstarter

  • Restored shifter

  • New countershaft sprocket

  • Completely rebuilt water pump with new seals and gaskets

  • Professional engine refinishing and reassembly (Clutch Cover is scheduled for repainting a third time this week)

One of the details that separates this rebuild from the average restoration is the transmission.

We used genuine OEM Honda new-old-stock transmission bearings rather than inexpensive aftermarket substitutes.

Finding correct-quality components for a motorcycle this old requires patience, experience, and a willingness to spend the necessary money.

That's exactly what we did.

The engine was finished with meticulous attention to detail, including restored or replaced fasteners throughout.

The result is an outstanding period Honda powerplant that looks incredible and delivers the thrilling performance these machines became famous for.

Since completion, this motorcycle has accumulated approximately 30 minutes of total operating time, consisting of testing, tuning, and evaluation.

It starts easy, runs excellent, and pulls extremely hard.

The power-to-weight ratio is astonishing.

For a vintage 125cc motocross machine with drum brakes, this bike is an absolute rocket!

PREMIUM $440 PWK AIR STRYKER CARBURETOR!

We didn't compromise when it came to the fuel system.

The motorcycle is equipped with a brand-new PWK Air Striker carburetor,

Additional fuel and induction restoration includes:

  • Brand-new Twin Air foam air filter

  • Completely restored original airbox

  • Airbox hard plastic professionally refinished

  • Excellent original rubber components

  • New carburetor drain and vent lines

  • New spark plug

  • New spark plug cap

  • New reed valves

The entire intake system has been addressed to complement the freshly rebuilt engine.

This is a serious performance-oriented restoration, not simply a display motorcycle.

COMPLETE COOLING SYSTEM RESTORATION

The liquid-cooling system has also received comprehensive attention.

Rather than reuse aging 43-year-old cooling components, we equipped the machine with upgraded replacement parts.

  • Brand-new oversized aluminum radiators

  • Brand-new silicone radiator hoses

  • Brand-new radiator cap

  • New radiator protection components

  • Completely rebuilt original water pump

  • New water-pump seals and gaskets

  • Cooling-system hardware restored or replaced

The oversized aluminum radiators not only provide a fantastic factory-racer appearance but also offer increased cooling capacity.

The entire assembly looks outstanding against the Honda-red chassis.

CUSTOM FACTORY-STYLE DG EXHAUST SYSTEM!

One of my favorite features of this build is the exhaust system.

The motorcycle is fitted with a brand-new DG expansion chamber, but we weren't satisfied with simply bolting it on out of the box.

Our technicians went the extra mile to give the pipe the appearance of a hand-finished factory racing component.

Using a high-speed polishing wheel and Scotch-Brite finishing techniques, the entire expansion chamber was carefully refinished.

The welded seams were then heat-treated with a torch to create the beautiful golden coloration associated with hand-finished works-style two-stroke exhausts.

The pipe is protected with a light WD-40 coating to help prevent surface corrosion.

The result is an absolutely spectacular factory-racer appearance!

Additional exhaust details include:

  • Brand-new DG expansion chamber

  • Heat-colored welds

  • New exhaust mounting springs

  • Original Honda factory silencer professionally restored and reconditioned

  • Exhaust system carefully mounted and aligned

The original silencer was retained because we wanted to preserve the motorcycle's authentic period character while incorporating a beautiful new performance expansion chamber.

It's the perfect combination of classic Honda heritage and custom factory-racer styling.

COMPLETE FRAME-OFF CHASSIS RESTORATION

The entire motorcycle was dismantled down to its bare frame.

The frame was inspected, prepared, and repainted in the original Honda factory-style red finish.

The lower frame rails are in excellent condition, a particularly desirable feature on a vintage motocross bike.

Every component was evaluated before reassembly.

When you strip a motorcycle down to the frame and restore it to this level, there's no hiding worn-out components or mismatched finishes.

Once the frame looks brand new, everything attached to it needs to meet the same standard.

That's exactly how this restoration grew into a 107-hour project.

We simply weren't willing to cut corners.

PROFESSIONALLY REBUILT RACE-PREPARED FRONT SUSPENSION

The front suspension was completely dismantled and rebuilt by Eric, one of our leading technicians and a highly experienced suspension specialist.

Eric has over a decade of professional motorcycle service experience, with a family background in the motorcycle suspension business.

Suspension is his specialty, and his craftsmanship is evident throughout this build.

Front suspension restoration:

  • Original front forks completely disassembled

  • Fork internals comprehensively rebuilt

  • Upgraded race-specification internal components

  • New fork seals

  • New fork boots

  • Fork lower legs meticulously refinished

  • Original triple clamps vapor-honed

  • Triple clamps professionally clear-coated

  • Fork hardware restored or replaced

  • Front suspension reassembled and inspected

The fork lowers are particularly impressive.

They have been refinished to a standard that arguably exceeds their original factory appearance.

The triple clamps have that beautiful, clean aluminum finish that makes the entire front end look like a period factory race machine.

BRAND-NEW TAKASAGO EXCEL RIMS & BUCHANAN SPOKES

The original wheels were in reasonably good cosmetic condition when we purchased the motorcycle.

Unfortunately, inspection revealed a slight crack in one of the original rims.

At that point, we decided that replacing one wheel wasn't enough.

If we were going to install a brand-new rear rim, the front needed to match.

And that's how a simple wheel repair became a complete professional wheel restoration.

Front wheel:

  • Brand-new Takasago Excel aluminum rim

  • Brand-new Buchanan spokes

  • Original Honda hub vapor-honed and refinished

  • Brand-new wheel bearings

  • Brake assembly restored

  • New EBC front brake shoes

  • New front brake cable

  • Carefully rebuilt and trued wheel assembly

Rear wheel:

  • Brand-new Takasago Excel aluminum rim

  • Brand-new Buchanan spokes

  • Original Honda rear hub vapor-honed and repainted

  • New rear wheel bearings

  • Brand-new Dunlop Geomax MX34 rear motocross tire

  • New inner tube

  • New rim strip

  • Brand-new rear sprocket

  • New sprocket mounting nuts and bolts

  • Complete wheel reassembly and truing

These wheels look phenomenal.

The Takasago Excel rims and Buchanan spokes are premium-quality components, and the refinished original Honda hubs maintain the classic appearance of the motorcycle.

It's the attention to details like these that sets this CR125R apart.

COMPLETE PRO-LINK REAR SUSPENSION REBUILD!

Honda's Pro-Link rear suspension was advanced technology for its era, and we wanted this system to perform as impressively as it looks.

The entire rear suspension assembly was dismantled.

Rear suspension restoration includes:

  • Original swingarm completely removed

  • Swingarm sanded and refinished with a factory-style Scotch-Brite finish

  • New Pro-Link graphics

  • Brand-new swingarm bearings

  • Brand-new linkage bearings

  • Rear shock completely dismantled

  • Shock body vapor-honed and refinished

  • Internal shock components rebuilt with race-specification upgrades

  • New shock bump-stop components

  • Shock spring refinished and repainted

  • Rear suspension professionally reassembled

  • Brand-new lower chain guide

  • New chain slider

  • New upper chain roller

  • New lower chain roller

  • New gold drive chain

  • Restored or replaced suspension mounting hardware

Again, this work was performed with the involvement of our suspension specialist, Eric.

The shock was not simply cleaned up and reinstalled.

It was professionally rebuilt, inside and out.

The rear swingarm has a gorgeous period-correct aluminum appearance, complemented by fresh graphics, restored linkage hardware, and the brand-new wheel assembly.

ORIGINAL 1983 HONDA FUEL TANK – 7 HOURS OF POLISHING!

One of the most impressive original components on the motorcycle is the fuel tank.

This is the original 1983 Honda fuel tank, not a reproduction!

Rather than repaint or clear-coat the tank, we painstakingly restored its original finish through a multistage sanding, polishing, and buffing process.

Our restoration work order documents approximately seven hours devoted specifically to the fuel tank.

Think about that.

Seven hours of professional labor on one component!

The tank underwent careful surface correction using progressively finer abrasives followed by polishing to bring back its original luster.

The finished tank is absolutely stunning.

And importantly:

It is not painted. It is not clear-coated. It is the original vintage Honda plastic, professionally restored!

This is exactly the kind of detail collectors appreciate.

Original factory identification tag retained!

The motorcycle also retains its original Honda CR125 identification tag dated November 1982.

This is the genuine factory tag, not an aftermarket reproduction.

It's a beautiful original detail that helps preserve the machine's identity and history.

EXCLUSIVE CUSTOM HRC-INSPIRED GRAPHICS!

The graphics package is another feature that makes this CR125R truly one of a kind.

These are not generic reproduction decals purchased online.

They were specially designed and produced by our experienced graphics specialist, Christy, who has approximately 30 years of experience in graphic design and production.

The motorcycle features our signature staggered red, white, and blue graphics with American flag and HRC-inspired styling.

We've been incorporating this distinctive look into select restorations for approximately 15 years.

It's become one of our favorite design treatments.

Producing graphics for vintage motorcycles requires far more work than many people realize.

Original body panels don't always match modern reproduction templates, and off-the-shelf decals often fit poorly, wrinkle, or leave unattractive gaps.

For this restoration, the graphics were carefully developed specifically for the motorcycle, with custom templates and digital layout work to achieve the desired appearance.

Custom graphic features:

  • Red, white, and blue graphics

  • American flag styling

  • HRC graphics

  • Custom-shaped side number plate graphics

  • Matching front number plate design

  • Custom reproduction detailing

  • Carefully fitted graphics for the original-style bodywork

The end result is an unforgettable period works-racer appearance.

You can't simply order this exact graphics package off the shelf.

RESTORED BODYWORK, SEAT & COCKPIT!

Virtually every visible component was restored, refurbished, or replaced.

Bodywork and seating:

  • Original Honda fuel tank professionally restored and polished

  • Brand-new seat foam

  • Brand-new seat cover

  • New front fender

  • New front number plate

  • New radiator shrouds

  • Exclusive custom graphics package

  • Original airbox professionally refinished

  • Original footpegs restored

  • Original shifter restored

  • Original kickstarter refinished

Handlebars and controls:

  • New Tusk aluminum handlebars

  • Renthal crossbar pad

  • New ODI handgrips

  • New clutch perch

  • New clutch lever

  • New brake perch and rubber protectors

  • New throttle assembly

  • New front brake cable

  • Controls and mounting hardware professionally restored or replaced

Throughout the motorcycle, you'll find brand-new fasteners, genuine original components that have been carefully refinished, and original hardware that has been zinc-plated where appropriate.

This wasn't a restoration where everything was simply sprayed with paint and assembled.

Individual components were addressed until the complete motorcycle achieved the consistent, factory-fresh appearance we wanted.

BUILT BY KAPLAN CYCLES' PROFESSIONAL RESTORATION TEAM!

This project was performed by several of our leading technicians, including:

Leo – Lead Restoration Technician

Leo has been with our organization for more than five years and is one of the key people responsible for the exceptional restoration work that comes out of our shop.

Eric – Senior Technician & Suspension Specialist

Eric brought his extensive mechanical and suspension background to this project, particularly the complete front and rear suspension rebuilds.

Lee Mack – Restoration Technician

Lee contributed his technical expertise throughout this meticulous restoration.

These technicians worked together to complete the build, while I personally oversaw the restoration process.

At Kaplan Cycles, vintage motorcycle restorations aren't just another service we perform.

They're a passion.

We've built an extensive motorcycle restoration and service operation, with approximately 20 technicians, 16 existing motorcycle lifts, and plans to expand to 24 lifts.

We've restored motorcycles for collectors, enthusiasts, museums, and riders who appreciate the craftsmanship of classic machines.

But when I restore one of my own bikes, there's something special about it.

I get to make every decision.

I choose the components.

I decide how far to take the restoration.

And I build the motorcycle exactly the way I want it.

This 1983 Honda CR125R is the result of that philosophy.

HONEST CONDITION DISCLOSURE – PLEASE READ!

We believe in describing our motorcycles accurately, including minor imperfections.

This is an exceptionally restored 43-year-old vintage racing motorcycle, but we want prospective buyers to understand the following details.

Clutch/water-pump cover: The original Honda cover was retained because replacement examples are extremely difficult to locate. During restoration, the cover's sealing surface required extensive attention. It was removed several times, carefully flattened on a precision flat surface, and reinstalled using two gaskets and gasket sealant to address the imperfect mating surface.

The repair has corrected the active leakage. The motorcycle does not leave puddles of oil or coolant underneath it; however, a very slight oil mist or dampness may occasionally be visible at the lower engine case seam.

Cover finish: There is a small touched-up paint chip on the restored cover. WE WILL REPAINT THE CLUTCH COVER BEFORE SHIPPING

Frame detail: There is a small indentation or relief area on the frame near the kickstarter/boot-contact area. There is also a minor boot scuff in this location that we intend to touch up before shipment.

These items are disclosed in the interest of complete transparency.

The original components were preserved wherever practical, and the motorcycle has been thoroughly test-ridden and evaluated after restoration.

WHY THE 1983 HONDA CR125R IS SO SPECIAL!

The early 1980s represented an extraordinary period of development in motocross history.

Manufacturers were pushing the limits of two-stroke engine design, suspension technology, chassis development, and weight reduction.

Honda's CR series was at the forefront of that competition.

The 1983 CR125R represents an exciting chapter in Honda's evolution of the liquid-cooled, Pro-Link-equipped 125cc motocross racer.

These motorcycles were purpose-built racing machines.

They weren't designed to spend their lives in climate-controlled collections.

They were designed to be ridden hard, raced, crashed, repaired, and raced again.

Consequently, finding a 1983 CR125R that still has excellent original components, a sound frame, and the potential to justify a full restoration is increasingly difficult.

Finding one that has already received this level of professional attention is rarer still.

Most surviving examples have endured decades of riding, modifications, questionable repairs, and parts substitutions.

This machine has been painstakingly restored with a combination of original Honda components, genuine Honda NOS parts, and carefully selected premium replacement components.

It's an extraordinary combination of authenticity, craftsmanship, and performance.

A collectible classic that you can actually fire up and enjoy!

INVESTMENT-GRADE APPEARANCE – RIDER-READY PERFORMANCE!

There are plenty of vintage motocross motorcycles that look reasonably presentable in photographs.

But take a close look at the details.

Are the engine cases restored and refinished?

Has the crankshaft been professionally rebuilt?

Were genuine OEM transmission bearings installed?

Are the wheels completely rebuilt with premium rims, spokes, and bearings?

Was the rear shock actually disassembled and rebuilt?

Are the swingarm and linkage bearings new?

Was the original tank properly restored instead of covered with paint?

Are the engine fasteners new or correctly refinished?

Was the entire motorcycle dismantled to the frame?

On this CR125R, the answer is yes.

This is a genuine comprehensive restoration, not a cosmetic lipstick job.

The bike looks like a factory racing machine and performs with the exhilarating character that made vintage 125cc two-strokes legendary.

The lightweight chassis, responsive power delivery, and distinctive sound of a classic Honda CR125R provide a riding experience that modern motorcycles simply cannot duplicate.

For me, the biggest reward from a project like this is finally getting to ride it.

After months of parts sourcing, rebuilding, refinishing, and assembly, there's nothing like kicking it over, hearing that two-stroke come to life, and experiencing what these motorcycles were capable of more than four decades ago.

And this particular CR125R does not disappoint.

It's ridiculously fast for a 125, beautifully balanced, and an absolute blast to ride!

AN EXTRAORDINARY OPPORTUNITY FOR THE HONDA COLLECTOR!

If you've been searching for an exceptional 1983 Honda CR125R, this is a motorcycle worth serious consideration.

We invested approximately $25,000 restoring it, excluding the purchase price of the original machine and countless hours of personal project management.

Could we have restored it for less?

Of course.

But it wouldn't be this motorcycle.

We didn't build this machine to meet a budget.

We built it to meet our standards.

The result is one of the finest examples of a professionally restored 1983 Honda CR125R that we've had the privilege of offering.

Whether you're assembling a world-class vintage motocross collection, displaying it alongside other iconic Honda racing motorcycles, or looking for an absolutely spectacular classic two-stroke to enjoy, this motorcycle deserves a place at the top of your list.

The new owner will benefit from an enormous investment of professional labor, premium parts, specialized knowledge, and painstaking craftsmanship.

We have far more invested in this machine than we realistically expect to recover.

Our loss is the next owner's opportunity.

SELLING AT AUCTION – LET THE MARKET DECIDE!

We're offering this extraordinary CR125R at auction.

With 107 documented hours of labor, more than $4,000 in parts, a completely rebuilt engine and suspension, premium wheels, custom factory-style exhaust, restored original tank, and exclusive graphics, the restoration itself represents an investment far beyond that of an ordinary vintage 125.

There's something special about owning a motorcycle that was built without compromise.

One that wasn't rushed.

One that wasn't restored merely to make a profit.

One that reflects the passion and craftsmanship of the people who built it.

This is that motorcycle.

Finding another 1983 Honda CR125R with this combination of restoration quality, mechanical preparation, custom detailing, and documented professional work would be exceptionally difficult.

Don't miss your opportunity to own this stunning piece of Honda motocross history!
