1982 YAMAHA YZ100

Absolutely Stunning Frame-Off Restoration

No Expense Spared

Without question, the 1982 Yamaha YZ100 is the most collectible and desirable air-cooled 100cc motocross bikes ever built. Whether you're heading to MX Rewind, the Marty Tripes Revenge Series, AHRMA competition, Unadilla vintage events, or simply looking for one of the finest examples available anywhere, this YZ100 checks every box.

This motorcycle came from the legendary Tisco Racing collection in Texas, a group of 93 vintage motocross machines assembled by a passionate collector who understood exactly what made a great race bike: excellent original frames, pristine engine cases, and the best possible core machines.

We saved the best for last.

This YZ100 had already received significant attention during its time in Texas, including engine work and race preparation. After arriving at Kaplan Cycles, we decided it deserved a complete no-expense-spared restoration. The bike was stripped completely to the bare frame and rebuilt from the ground up by our lead restoration specialist, Devin - known around here as "Mr. Perfect" for good reason.

The result is one of the finest 1982 YZ100s we've ever offered for sale.

Engine & Performance

The engine was completely disassembled and rebuilt from the crankshaft up:

  • New crank bearings

  • New seals throughout

  • New base gasket

  • New head gasket

  • New piston

  • New rings

  • New wrist pin bearing

  • Fresh gear oil

  • New intake manifold

  • New reed valves

  • Carburetor professionally rebuilt

The cylinder was sent to LA Sleeve and professionally re-sleeved at a cost of over $400 and fitted with a new stock-bore piston assembly.

The cylinder ports were carefully cleaned up and polished to improve flow while maintaining reliability. The cylinder head was vapor-honed, decarbonized, and detailed to like-new condition.

The ignition system has been upgraded with a brand-new HPI ignition for improved starting, stronger spark, and modern reliability.

This is one of the strongest-running air-cooled YZ100s you'll find anywhere.

Premium Red 64 Racing Components

One of the highlights of this restoration is the premium Red 64 Racing equipment imported directly from the United Kingdom:

  • Handmade Red 64 Racing expansion chamber

  • Matching Red 64 Racing silencer

  • Handmade aluminum fuel tank with Professionally powder-coated Yamaha yellow finish

The fit, finish, and craftsmanship of these components are outstanding and elevate the motorcycle well beyond a standard restoration.

Chassis & Suspension

The frame rails tell the story.

Before restoration, both frame rails were perfect—no dents, no flattening, and no evidence of hard use. The original wheel set is equally impressive, remaining straight and true.

This motorcycle saw extremely limited use before being restored.

Restoration work included:

  • Frame refinished in original gloss black

  • Swingarm refinished

  • Triple clamps refinished

  • Fork lowers refinished

  • Rear brake pedal refinished

  • Foot pegs refinished

  • Engine covers refinished

  • Engine cases vapor-honed and detailed

Fork service included:

  • New fork seals

  • New fork slider components

  • Polished fork tubes

  • Detailed fork lowers

The chrome fork tubes remain exceptionally clean with no pitting.

Wheels, Tires & Brakes

  • Original Yamaha wheel set

  • Original spokes

  • New front tire

  • New rear tire

  • New tubes

  • New rim strips

  • New brake pads

The wheels are straight, true, and in outstanding condition.

Cosmetics & Details

Every visible component was carefully restored or replaced.

Highlights include:

  • New front fender

  • New rear fender

  • New front number plate

  • New side panels

  • New seat foam

  • New seat cover

  • New ODI grips

  • New throttle assembly

  • New fuel cap and vent hose

  • New shorty black levers

  • New chain guide

  • New chain slider

  • New rear sprocket

  • New countershaft sprocket

  • New gold chain

  • New sprocket hardware

  • New fuel lines

  • New Twin Air filter

The graphics package was custom designed by Christie Kaplan of Staiger Designs and features period-correct styling with tasteful custom detailing that complements the bike perfectly.

The original Yamaha Energy Induction system remains intact and properly detailed.

Why the 1982 YZ100?

Many vintage racers consider the 1982 YZ100 to be the pinnacle of air-cooled 100cc motocross development.

The engine shares the same robust bottom-end architecture as the larger Yamaha IT175 and IT200 models, making it exceptionally durable and overbuilt for its displacement.

Their combination of reliability, performance, handling, and rarity has pushed values steadily upward. We've seen rough, unrestored examples requiring major engine work bring $5000+ at auction.

Finding one restored to this level is becoming increasingly difficult.

Restoration Investment

This restoration included approximately:

  • 46 hours of labor @ $150 PH = $6,750 Plus $3,285 in parts

  • = $10,180 total restoration investment

This figure does not include:

  • Original motorcycle acquisition cost

  • Shipping from Texas

  • Administrative and inventory expenses

This YZ100 is not the cheapest one you'll find.

It's the best.

The Bottom Line

If you're looking for a museum-quality collectible, a premier vintage race bike, or simply one of the finest surviving examples of Yamaha's legendary YZ100, this motorcycle deserves your attention.

It starts easily, runs exceptionally strong, shifts properly, and presents at a level rarely seen on vintage motocross machinery.

Ready for the showroom.

Ready for the starting gate.

Ready for the next caretaker.
