Description
1982 Suzuki RM125Z – Concours-Level Frame-Off Restoration – 111 Hours Invested
Few motorcycles represent Suzuki’s motocross dynasty better than the 1982 RM125Z. This was built during an era when Suzuki was crushing the competition in America, Europe, and throughout the world—and this exceptional example has received one of the most extensive restorations ever completed at the New England Motorcycle Museum.
Completely dismantled to the last nut and bolt, this RM125Z underwent a no-expense-spared, frame-off restoration encompassing 111 hours of professional shop labor and more than $3,000 in parts. Our documented investment totals $19,692—not including the original cost of the motorcycle or transportation.
This is not a quick cosmetic refurbishment. It is a comprehensively rebuilt, professionally finished, fully sorted vintage motocross machine that runs as impressively as it looks.
The Championship Legacy
The 1982 season was one of the greatest years in Suzuki motocross history.
Mark “The Bomber” Barnett captured the 1982 AMA 125cc National Motocross Championship, defeating Johnny O’Mara by 35 points. It was Barnett’s third consecutive AMA 125 National Championship—1980, 1981, and 1982—all won for Suzuki.
Barnett also competed in the premier Supercross class aboard Suzuki’s 250, winning four rounds and finishing second in the championship behind Donnie Hansen.
Although Barnett’s factory machine was the works RA125 rather than a showroom-stock RM125Z, important technology flowed between Suzuki’s factory racing program and its production motorcycles. The most recognizable example was Suzuki’s revolutionary Full Floater rear suspension system.
Period motorcycle publications praised the 1982 RM125 as the 125 to own. It won comparison tests and was widely recognized for suspension performance that was considered light-years ahead of much of the competition.
Suzuki was equally dominant overseas. Eric Geboers won six Grands Prix on his way to the 1982 FIM 125cc Motocross World Championship, while teammate and former world champion Harry Everts finished fourth.
Suzuki won every 125cc Motocross World Championship from the class’s inaugural season in 1975 through 1983—an extraordinary nine consecutive titles. That dynasty included legendary riders such as Gaston Rahier, Akira Watanabe, Harry Everts, and Eric Geboers.
Suzuki achieved another historic milestone in 1982 when Brad Lackey won the 500cc Motocross World Championship, becoming the first American ever to capture a motocross world title.
Simply stated, 1982 was a monumental year for Suzuki, and the RM125Z represents that remarkable era.
A $19,692 Labor of Love
This RM125Z ranks as the second-most-expensive frame-off motorcycle restoration we have ever completed.
Three of our experienced technicians contributed to the project. Aaron handled the engine rebuild, while “The Wizard” performed extensive subsystem work, assembly, and final tuning. Owen completed a substantial amount of the polishing, painting, preparation, and assembly.
Together, they logged 111 documented shop hours. At our standard labor rate of $150 per hour, the labor alone totals $16,650. Combined with more than $3,000 in parts, our documented restoration investment reached $19,692.
The motorcycle comes with an extensive 11-page work order documenting the parts, labor, technician notes, and work performed throughout the restoration.
We are not claiming that the motorcycle is worth more than $20,000, and we expect to sell it for less than our total investment. This project was completed because we love these historic Suzukis and wanted to build one correctly. It was never intended to be a get-rich-quick proposition.
Complete Engine Rebuild
The engine was completely dismantled and comprehensively rebuilt.
The cylinder was professionally serviced by Millennium Technologies. The ports were cleaned and polished, and the engine received a new piston, rings, top-end bearing, gaskets, seals, reed valves, kicker seal, shifter seal, base gasket, and head gasket.
The clutch system was extensively renewed with a brand-new clutch basket, clutch plates, springs, and pushrod bearings. A new countershaft sprocket was also installed.
The Mikuni carburetor was rebuilt and fitted with new jets. New fuel lines, fuel-drain lines, and a fuel filter were installed. The original airbox was carefully restored and fitted with a new air filter.
The cooling system was serviced with new coolant and a new water-pump gasket. The original radiator was cleaned, restored, and refinished.
The engine cases and covers were beautifully restored and refinished in their proper factory colors. Much of the engine hardware was replaced, leaving the entire powerplant looking exceptionally fresh and professionally finished.
The result is a strong-running, crisp, properly tuned 125 that absolutely hauls the mail.
Full DG Exhaust System
The motorcycle is equipped with a brand-new, complete DG exhaust system, including the expansion chamber and silencer.
Combined with the rebuilt engine, refreshed Mikuni carburetor, new reeds, and restored intake system, the DG exhaust gives this RM125 the sharp response and classic two-stroke sound it deserves.
Chassis and Full Floater Suspension
The motorcycle was completely disassembled down to the bare frame. The frame was professionally powder coated and carefully reassembled using extensive new hardware.
The original frame rails remain in excellent condition, showing that this motorcycle did not suffer the level of abuse commonly seen on vintage motocross machines.
The original aluminum swingarm retains its factory crosshatch finish. It was not aggressively sanded or polished, preserving an important indicator of its originality and condition.
Suzuki’s sophisticated Full Floater rear suspension was one of the RM125Z’s greatest strengths. Unlike conventional systems of the era, the shock moved at both its upper and lower mounting points, creating a highly progressive suspension action.
The complete swingarm and linkage system was dismantled, inspected, cleaned, serviced, and reassembled. Bearings and related components were renewed or serviced as necessary.
The Kayaba front forks were completely rebuilt with new seals and fresh fork oil. New fork boots were also installed. The steering head received new bearings.
This suspension design helped make the 1982 RM125 one of the best-handling 125cc motocross motorcycles of its generation, and this system has been thoroughly restored for its next owner.
Wheels, Brakes and Final Drive
The front and rear wheel assemblies were completely serviced and restored. The hubs and brake backing plates were refinished, and the wheel bearings were renewed.
The motorcycle received new Dunlop 952 tires, new tubes, and new rim strips.
The final-drive system includes a new gold chain, new Renthal sprocket, new countershaft sprocket, new sprocket hardware, a new chain slider, new chain roller, new chain guide, and new chain-adjuster plate.
The original drum-brake assemblies were inspected and serviced. The original foot pegs and shifter remain in excellent condition.

A Museum-Quality RM125Z You Can Ride
This restoration was completed by the New England Motorcycle Museum as a genuine labor of love.
For those of us who grew up reading Dirt Bike and Motocross Action during the 1970s and 1980s, the RM125Z represents one of the most exciting periods in motocross history. The magazines recommended upgrading the pipe, silencer, reeds, air filter, tires, chain, sprockets, and handlebars—and virtually everything enthusiasts dreamed of doing to one of these machines has been done here.
This motorcycle is beautiful enough to place in a serious collection or museum, yet it was mechanically rebuilt and professionally tuned to be ridden. It is ready for vintage motocross, vintage Supercross, AHRMA competition, exhibition use, or display in a premier Suzuki collection.
There may be less expensive 1982 RM125s available, but replicating this restoration would require finding the right motorcycle, sourcing thousands of dollars in parts, and investing more than 100 hours of professional labor. This one is finished, documented, dialed in, and ready to find its forever home.
For additional information or to purchase this exceptional 1982 Suzuki RM125Z, please call Junior at 860-454-7024.
Thanks for looking, and God bless America.
