1982 KAWASAKI AR80 — MUSEUM-QUALITY ORIGINAL SURVIVOR
ONLY 2,557 ORIGINAL MILES | DECADES OF SHOWROOM DISPLAY | $2,541 KAPLAN CYCLES RECOMMISSIONING
AN EXTRAORDINARY PIECE OF KAWASAKI HISTORY
Every once in a while, a motorcycle comes along with a story as remarkable as its condition. This spectacular 1982 Kawasaki AR80 is one of those motorcycles.
After approximately 55 years in business as one of Connecticut's longstanding Kawasaki dealerships, New Haven Powersports closed its doors for the final time. The closing marked the end of an era in Connecticut motorcycling history.
Kaplan Cycles had the opportunity to acquire a substantial collection of dealership assets, including professional service equipment, motorcycle lifts, tools, a service van, and other equipment accumulated over the dealership's long history.
But among those acquisitions was something truly special.
This incredible 1982 Kawasaki AR80 had been proudly displayed inside the dealership's showroom for decades.
Through our friendship with Chris Green and his wife, Jody, we were able to arrange the purchase of this extraordinary motorcycle and bring it home to Kaplan Cycles and the New England Motorcycle Museum.
What makes this machine so special isn't simply its remarkably low mileage. It's the fact that it has survived more than four decades in an extraordinary state of originality and preservation.
This is, without question, the finest original Kawasaki AR80 we've ever had the privilege of offering.
A TRUE TIME CAPSULE — JUST 2,557 MILES
Finding an unrestored Japanese two-stroke motorcycle from the early 1980s in this condition is becoming increasingly difficult.
Finding one that has spent decades carefully preserved inside a Kawasaki dealership showroom is something else entirely.
This AR80 retains an exceptional collection of original factory components, including:
-
Original Kawasaki factory paint on the fuel tank
-
Original painted bodywork and fenders
-
Original front fairing and windscreen
-
Original factory seat cover
-
Original factory exhaust system and silencer
-
Original wheels and rims
-
Original front forks
-
Original chain and sprockets
-
Original tires
-
Original handlebars, controls, and grips
-
Original factory appearance throughout
To the best of our inspection, we have found no evidence of non-original cosmetic modifications or aftermarket performance equipment.
The remarkable factory finish, undamaged bodywork, and exceptional overall presentation testify to the care this motorcycle received throughout its life.
Because it spent decades indoors, it avoided many of the conditions that typically destroy vintage motorcycles: prolonged ultraviolet exposure, harsh weather, salt air, and constant outdoor storage.
The paint retains a beautiful finish. The plastics are exceptionally well preserved. The original seat, grips, windscreen, and exhaust are all in outstanding condition.
Even the front fender is exceptional. In fact, this is the first AR80 we've had that doesn't exhibit the typical damage we often see on these original front fenders.
This motorcycle has not been cosmetically restored. Its beauty comes from decades of remarkable preservation.
PROFESSIONALLY RECOMMISSIONED BY KAPLAN CYCLES
Although this motorcycle had been preserved beautifully, it had spent many years as a showroom display rather than being regularly ridden.
Our technicians determined that a full restoration was completely unnecessary.
Instead, we performed an extensive mechanical recommissioning, comprehensive safety inspection, and meticulous cosmetic preservation detail.
Our goal was simple: preserve as much originality as possible while returning this remarkable little Kawasaki to proper running condition.
Mechanical service performed:
-
Removed and thoroughly cleaned the carburetor
-
Installed a new fuel line
-
Installed a new air filter
-
Replaced the battery with a brand-new unit
-
Changed the transmission gear oil
-
Installed a new horn
-
Inspected the motorcycle's mechanical and safety-related systems
-
Performed a running and riding evaluation
Cosmetic preservation and detailing performed:
-
Thorough steam cleaning, followed by careful hand washing
-
Complete professional polishing and detailing
-
Removed and detailed the rear wheel assembly
-
Vapor-honed and cleaned the rear sprocket
-
Thoroughly cleaned the chain and chain guard
-
Cleaned and detailed the swingarm
-
Restored the rear brake drum's appearance, including refinishing its deteriorated original clear coat
-
Removed, cleaned, and detailed the front wheel assembly
-
Vapor-honed applicable components
-
Cleaned and polished the original wheels and rims
-
Detailed the front brake disc, front forks, and surrounding components
-
Carefully cleaned and polished the original silencer cover
-
Cleaned and conditioned the original seat and associated components
-
Performed extensive hand detailing throughout the motorcycle
The result is simply spectacular.
Our technicians invested approximately 16 hours of professional shop labor, plus approximately $140 in parts and supplies.
Total Kaplan Cycles service and preservation invoice: $2,541.
This was not a cheap wipe-down or a quick carburetor cleaning. It was a professional, dealership-level recommissioning and preservation service intended to present this original survivor at the highest possible standard.
THE LEGENDARY KAWASAKI TWO-STROKE EXPERIENCE
The 1982 Kawasaki AR80 represents a wonderful period of Japanese motorcycling history.
Featuring an 80cc two-stroke engine, six-speed transmission, sporty styling, and lightweight construction, the AR80 brought the excitement of Kawasaki's larger sport motorcycles into a compact and thoroughly entertaining package.
With its aggressive little fairing, bright Kawasaki paintwork, and classic two-stroke exhaust note, it's easy to see why these motorcycles developed such an enthusiastic following.
Although small in displacement, this is a genuine motorcycle with the spirit of a much larger sport machine.
And it's surprisingly quick!
During our road test, the AR80 accelerated smoothly and confidently through its six-speed gearbox. We observed an indicated 55 MPH with additional acceleration remaining.
For an 80cc motorcycle, its performance is genuinely impressive.
The lightweight chassis, responsive engine, and excellent power delivery make this a remarkably enjoyable little machine.
Over the years, enthusiasts have used AR80s for everything from daily transportation to modified small-displacement club racing. Many examples were fitted with aftermarket exhausts, performance carburetors, and other racing components.
Unfortunately, that also means finding an original, unmodified survivor today is particularly challenging.
This motorcycle has escaped that fate.
Its original exhaust, original cosmetic components, and exceptionally preserved factory configuration make it a true collector's piece.
ORIGINALITY AND CONDITION
We take great pride in accurately representing the motorcycles we offer.
This AR80 is now more than 40 years old, and its extraordinary preservation should not be confused with a claim that it has never been used or that every component remains untouched.
Upon careful examination, the original fuel tank is exceptionally beautiful.
Both sides retain their original factory finish, with no visible dents and no significant scratches observed during our inspection.
We did notice one very small paint chip near the lower portion of the tank.
The rest of the motorcycle presents beautifully, with only minor age-related imperfections and patina consistent with careful preservation over four decades.
The motorcycle retains its original tires, which are important to its authenticity and collector appeal. Given their age, they should be replaced before regular road use.
The original rear brake drum's deteriorating clear coat was professionally refinished during our preservation service. Certain consumable and service components were replaced as described above.
We encourage serious collectors to study the photographs and accompanying video carefully.
This is an exceptionally original, museum-quality survivor, not a fully restored motorcycle.
And that distinction is exactly what makes it special.
A RARE OPPORTUNITY FOR SERIOUS KAWASAKI COLLECTORS
At Kaplan Cycles and the New England Motorcycle Museum, we've handled countless collectible Japanese motorcycles, including beautifully restored and exceptionally original Kawasaki two-strokes.
We've previously restored other AR80s, and videos of those machines can be found by searching for Kaplan Cycles Kawasaki AR80 online.
But this particular motorcycle stands apart.
It did not need a frame-up restoration.
It didn't need replacement paint, reproduction bodywork, or extensive cosmetic reconstruction.
It simply needed careful recommissioning, proper mechanical attention, and the preservation detailing necessary to showcase what was already there.
The result is a beautiful example of early-1980s Kawasaki engineering and styling, with an exceptionally interesting history.
Whether displayed alongside a collection of Kawasaki triples, KZs, GPzs, KDXs, KXs, or other classic Japanese motorcycles, this AR80 would be an outstanding addition.
It would look equally at home in a private museum, professional office, collector's showroom, or the centerpiece of a vintage motorcycle collection.
And unlike many static museum exhibits, this motorcycle has been recommissioned and successfully road-tested.
OWN A PIECE OF CONNECTICUT KAWASAKI DEALERSHIP HISTORY
For more than half a century, the dealership from which this motorcycle originated served Connecticut motorcycling enthusiasts.
This AR80 witnessed decades of changing motorcycle technology, countless new-model introductions, and generations of riders passing through that showroom.
Now it has been given a second chapter at Kaplan Cycles.
It is a tangible reminder of an important chapter in Connecticut Kawasaki dealership history.
Low original mileage. Extraordinary preservation. Decades of showroom display. Professional recommissioning. Outstanding Kawasaki dealership provenance.
It's difficult to imagine finding another example with this combination of originality, condition, and history.
