1981 Maico Mega 2 490 Concours Restoration Wheelsmith Öhlins Race Ready
Description
Offered here is a true holy-grail motocross machine: the legendary 1981 Maico 490 Mega 2. Widely regarded as one of the finest air-cooled motocross motorcycles ever produced, the Mega 2 combined monumental open-class power with exceptional handling and nearly 12 inches of suspension travel.
This extraordinary example has received a complete, no-expense-spared, concours-plus frame-off restoration. The motorcycle was dismantled to the last nut and bolt and rebuilt using the finest available components and the talents of some of the most respected Maico specialists in the industry.
This is not simply a cosmetically restored display bike. It has a fully rebuilt Wheelsmith-prepared engine, modernized Öhlins and Race Tech suspension, Dubya-built Excel wheels, HPI electronic ignition, a handmade Dutch Power exhaust and an extensive collection of NOS Magura controls and premium billet components.
Original 1981 Maico Components
The build began with excellent original 1981 Maico components, including:
-
Original gusseted Maico chassis
-
Original engine cases
-
Original triple clamps
-
Original front forks
-
Original Corte & Cosso piggyback shock bodies
-
Original footpegs
-
Original kickstarter
-
Original hubs and other core chassis components
The chassis was bead-blasted, carefully inspected and professionally powder-coated in the correct original Maico red. The engine cases and original components were exceptionally well preserved, providing an ideal foundation for this world-class restoration.
Wheelsmith-Prepared Engine
The engine was completely dismantled, with the cases split and every component inspected, restored or replaced as required.
Engine work and upgrades include:
-
Cerakoted engine cases
-
New connecting rod
-
Professionally balanced crankshaft
-
New crankshaft bearings and seals
-
Wheelsmith-ported cylinder and head
-
New cylinder sleeve
-
Cylinder professionally bored and matched to a new piston
-
New piston and rings
-
New engine bearings throughout
-
New seals and gaskets throughout
-
Fully inspected transmission
-
Fully serviced clutch assembly
-
New spark plug
-
New intake boot
-
New airbox boot
-
New engine hardware throughout
-
New countershaft sprocket protector
-
New Maico shifter
-
Restored original kickstarter
Rather than being conventionally painted, the engine was professionally Cerakoted, providing a beautiful and extremely durable finish with excellent heat-management properties.
Wheelsmith is one of the most respected names in vintage Maico engine development. Its porting work, combined with the fresh cylinder, piston, balanced crank and new rod, gives this engine the brutally strong yet tractable power delivery for which the Maico 490 became famous.
Mikuni Carburetor and HPI Ignition
The original fuel and ignition systems have been upgraded for improved starting and reliability:
-
New Mikuni 38mm carburetor
-
Special performance jetting
-
New HPI electronic ignition
-
New Motion Pro fuel lines
-
New fuel petcock
-
New vent and drain lines
-
New intake components
The ignition has been properly timed, and the carburetor has been carefully dialed in. Compression is exceptionally strong, just as it should be on a fresh Maico 490.
A new handlebar-mounted compression release makes starting much easier. Bring the engine to top dead center, use the release to move it just past TDC and give it a committed kick. Properly positioned, the motorcycle starts beautifully.
Dutch Power Handmade Exhaust
The engine breathes through a spectacular Dutch Power hand-coned exhaust manufactured in the Netherlands. This works-style expansion chamber is handmade from individually formed and welded cone sections.
The exhaust system is completed with an NOS Richter silencer, creating a period-correct factory-racing appearance and an unmistakable open-class two-stroke sound.
The power is absolutely ferocious. Our seat-of-the-pants estimate places performance in the neighborhood of 60 horsepower. It feels every bit as strong as a properly prepared Honda CR500, with enormous torque and the ability to pull hard from nearly anywhere in the powerband.
Öhlins-Converted Corte & Cosso Shocks
The original Corte & Cosso piggyback shocks were sent to renowned specialist Rick Horvath for a complete professional rebuild.
The original shock bodies were fitted with custom-installed Öhlins internals. From the outside they retain the correct 1981 Maico appearance, but internally they provide substantially improved Öhlins-quality damping and control.
This is one of the finest aspects of the entire build: authentic vintage appearance combined with dramatically improved modern suspension performance.
Restored and Upgraded Front Forks
The original Maico forks were completely restored and upgraded with Race Tech components.
Fork work includes:
-
New fork springs
-
New seals
-
New wipers
-
New fork oil
-
Race Tech suspension components
-
Restored fork lowers
-
Perfect fork-tube chrome
-
Original embossed Maico markings
-
Restored and vapor-honed triple clamps
-
New axle
-
New fork pinch bolts and hardware
The chrome is beautiful and shows none of the heavy roost damage commonly found on vintage motocross forks. With approximately 12 inches of suspension travel and roughly 15 inches of ground clearance, this is a tall, serious open-class machine.
The combination of Race Tech-prepared forks and Öhlins-converted rear shocks gives the motorcycle a remarkably controlled and modern feel.
Dubya-Built Excel Wheels

-
Billet aluminum backing-plate components
-
CNC-machined brake arm
-
Stainless-steel brake components
-
New rear axle
-

New gold 57-tooth rear sprocket
-

A Genuine Holy-Grail Maico
The 1981 Maico 490 Mega 2 occupies a unique place in motocross history. Its immense torque, controllable power delivery, long-travel suspension and legendary handling made it one of the most respected open-class motorcycles of its generation.
This example takes that legendary platform to another level. It retains the unmistakable character and appearance of the original while incorporating carefully selected improvements from Wheelsmith, Öhlins, Race Tech, Dubya, Maico Moe, HPI, Magura, Dutch Power and other leading vintage-motocross specialists.
Hundreds of hours were invested in planning, sourcing, machining, restoration and final assembly. The parts list alone represents a substantial investment, and the specialized craftsmen capable of completing work at this level are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
This Maico would be equally at home in a world-class collection, displayed in a motorcycle museum or lined up at a premier AMA vintage motocross event. With a capable rider aboard, it has the power, suspension and preparation required to compete at the highest levels of vintage racing.
Finding another 1981 Maico 490 Mega 2 is difficult. Finding another with a Wheelsmith engine, Öhlins-converted Corte & Cosso shocks, Race Tech forks, Dubya-built Excel wheels, Dutch Power exhaust, HPI ignition, billet braking system and this level of concours detailing may prove nearly impossible.
There is only one—and this is as good as it gets.

With over 17,000 units sold and still 100% positive feedback, we are the best stress-free buying experience you can have. From the first call to delivery at your door, we will handle it all — because vintage motorcycles deserve support, and so do you.
With every bike we curate you get:
• museum-level inspection & preservation services
• every machine is professionally evaluated, serviced, & rotisserie detailed
• all critical systems are checked, adjusted, or renewed
• you get professional setup, tuning, and delivery prep
• done by the best experts in the industry — we ride and restore every day
• you get post-sale phone support
• you get white-glove, insured, always-enclosed shipping to your door anywhere in the country
You’re buying from Kaplan Cycles at the New England Motorcycle Museum, one of the largest vintage motorcycle collections in North America. Free museum tours and tickets are included with every bike sold. With every bike you purchase, a portion of the proceeds is used to support, continue, and improve the 501(c)(3) nonprofit New England Motorcycle Museum.
You don’t just win an auction — YOU are creating & helping to preserve motorcycle history, and you become part of our family, a Kaplan Cycles client for life.
We do not take new clients off the street.
We do not service bikes purchased elsewhere.
We only take new exclusive clients who purchase a motorcycle from us.
You get a guided purchase experience with, and from, the experts who care about the bike as much as you do. If there’s a problem, you don’t get ghosted. You call us — you will have our cell phone numbers — we will answer your call on weekends, and we will help make it right.
Auction platforms = listing only. No support. No accountability.
Kaplan Cycles = we stand behind what we sell.
You are buying museum-curated provenance. That means:
• expert evaluation
• documented condition
• professional presentation
• long-term preservation mindset
You’re not just buying a motorcycle — you’re buying a curated piece of motorcycling history.
From the #1 family in this business — Kaplan Cycles & the New England Motorcycle Museum.
Sincerely,
Ken Kaplan Sr.
