Description

1972 Bultaco Alpina 350 – Numbers-Matching | Comprehensive Frame-Off Restoration | A Museum-Quality Classic

PLEASE WATCH THE VIDEO FOR FULL DETAILS

Few vintage motorcycles capture the spirit of early dual-purpose riding quite like the 1972 Bultaco Alpina 350. Built during the golden age of Spanish off-road motorcycles, the Alpina was engineered to do what very few machines of its era could—comfortably handle everything from back roads and trails to enduros and recreational riding. Combining the legendary handling of the Sherpa T trials bike with trail-friendly ergonomics, a wider-ratio transmission, lighting equipment, and a larger fuel tank, the Alpina became one of the most versatile motorcycles Bultaco ever produced.

Today, these machines are among the most desirable vintage Spanish motorcycles, especially in this level of restoration. Approximately 2,400 Alpina 350s were produced worldwide, with only about 1,000 imported into the United States, making them exceptionally rare collectors' pieces.

Legendary Bultaco Heritage

The Alpina borrowed heavily from two of Bultaco's most successful competition motorcycles:

  • The legendary Sherpa T, ridden by Sammy Miller to numerous World Trials Championships, revolutionized observed trials and established Bultaco as a world leader in off-road engineering.

  • The championship-winning Pursang motocross line, which earned countless championships throughout Europe and North America.

While the Alpina wasn't intended as a race bike, it inherited the proven engineering, exceptional handling, lightweight chromoly chassis, and rugged durability that made Bultaco famous worldwide.

Its relaxed steering geometry, longer swingarm, comfortable seat, and wide-ratio gearbox transformed that championship DNA into one of the finest recreational trail motorcycles ever built.

At only approximately 225 pounds, it remains remarkably lightweight—even by today's standards.

Matching Numbers – Low Original Mileage Survivor

This particular Alpina comes from the well-known Barry Lamb Collection in Florida.

When we purchased it over two years ago, it had only approximately 350 original miles.

Even after decades of storage, inspection revealed:

  • Excellent engine compression

  • Outstanding cylinder and piston condition verified by borescope

  • Original, unworn top end

  • Matching engine and frame numbers

  • Completely straight chassis

  • Exceptionally clean original cycle parts

Most importantly, the underside of the frame tells the story.

Unlike most Alpinas that spent decades bouncing over New England rocks during enduros and trail rides, this Florida motorcycle has virtually no damage to the frame rails or skid plate—making it an exceptional candidate for a no-compromise restoration.

Professional Frame-Off Restoration

Rather than simply freshening the motorcycle cosmetically, we completely disassembled it.

Every nut.

Every bolt.

Every assembly.

Every component was individually inspected, restored, refinished, rebuilt, repaired, or replaced as necessary.

The restoration was completed by Bill Kelly, a master technician with whom I've worked since the early 1980s at New England Cycle Sales. This became one of Bill's final restoration projects before retirement.

The project consumed approximately 62.5 documented shop hours over nearly eighteen months while waiting for the proper components to become available.

The investment included:

  • $2,300 in new parts

  • $750 professional paintwork

  • $9,375 in shop labor

  • $500 Shipping from Florida

  • Plus the Purchase cost of the motorcycle

Total restoration investment exceeded $13,400 before the purchase price of the motorcycle.

Quite honestly, we've invested more than the motorcycle's market value. But that's how we restore museum-quality motorcycles—we simply don't believe in shortcuts.

Engine

The engine required no major internal work because of its exceptionally low original mileage.

Instead, restoration focused on preserving and detailing the original engine:

  • Engine cases restored and refinished

  • Cylinder professionally painted

  • Cylinder head polished

  • Carburetor completely rebuilt

  • Airbox restored

  • New air filter installed

  • Intake system serviced

Ignition & Electrical

Major upgrades include:

  • Brand-new Electrex lighting coil

  • New wiring harness

  • Restored 6-volt lighting system

  • New headlight

  • New taillight

  • New mounting hardware

Everything works exactly as intended.

Exhaust

The original exhaust remains with the motorcycle, while the machine has been fitted with an original vintage Skyway silencer—a desirable period-correct upgrade that many Bultaco enthusiasts installed in the 1970s. It delivers a wonderful authentic exhaust note without compromising the bike's vintage character.

Seat

The original seat cover was intentionally retained because it remains in good original condition.

Replacement covers and foam remain readily available for those wishing to pursue absolute concours perfection, but we felt preserving the original seat added authenticity to this exceptionally original motorcycle.

A Joy to Ride

Collectors often describe the Alpina as one of the few vintage motorcycles that's just as enjoyable to ride as it is to display.

There's good reason.

The wide-ratio transmission allows comfortable cruising around town on the street.

The engine delivers smooth, tractable low-end torque.

It starts easily—typically first kick.

It idles beautifully.

It shifts properly through every gear.

The lightweight chassis inspires confidence on trails while remaining perfectly happy exploring country roads.

One New England rider even won an enduro championship aboard an Alpina before using the same motorcycle in observed trials competition—a testament to the incredible versatility of this remarkable design.

Rare Opportunity

During more than fifteen years of restoring vintage motorcycles, we've completed numerous Bultacos—but only a handful of Alpinas.

They simply don't come available very often, especially matching-numbers, low-mileage survivors worthy of a restoration at this level.

Finding an original bike...

Shipping it across the country...

Completely disassembling it...

Investing well over sixty hours of professional labor...

Installing thousands of dollars in correct parts...

Professional paint...

Powder coating...

Electrical upgrades...

Suspension...

Wheels...

Brakes...

Engine detailing...

The numbers simply don't work.

That's why purchasing one that's already been restored to this standard is such an outstanding value.
