1969 Honda CL350 Vintage Café Racer – 368cc Big Bore – Historic Loudon Road Racer – Period-Correct Racing Upgrades – Restoration Project

KAPLAN CYCLES | NEW ENGLAND MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM

A Historic, One-of-a-Kind Honda Road Racer With an Incredible Story, Over $13,500 Invested in Restoration Labor and Parts, and Decades of Racing History!

Offered for sale is an extraordinary vintage Honda CL350 café racer, a genuine old-school racing machine with an incredible history, extensive period-correct performance modifications, and a very special story behind it.

This is not your average vintage Honda. This motorcycle was owned and successfully raced for many years at Loudon by a longtime friend of ours from Harvard, Massachusetts. He had owned the bike since the 1970s and transformed it into a serious, purpose-built road racer during the golden era of lightweight motorcycle competition.

Near the end of his life, our friend contacted us with a special request. He wanted Kaplan Cycles to have his beloved racing motorcycle, with the understanding that we would restore it and bring it back to life.

We gave him our word.

What followed was a true labor of love, involving approximately 80 hours of professional restoration labor and more than $13,500 in documented labor and parts investment, not including the original purchase price of the motorcycle.

We succeeded in bringing the bike back to running and riding condition, and our friend lived to see his beloved Honda running again. Unfortunately, during subsequent testing, an internal engine failure occurred, and with our restoration backlog continuing to grow, we have made the difficult decision to offer this special machine to its next caretaker.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire an authentic vintage racing machine with tremendous character, extensive custom components, and the foundation for a spectacular restoration.

The History – A Real Loudon Road Racer

Our friend had owned this Honda since the 1970s, when he converted it from a street motorcycle into a dedicated lightweight road racer.

Over the years, he successfully competed at Loudon, New Hampshire, developing and modifying the bike with many of the finest performance components available during that era.

When we acquired the motorcycle, it had been sitting for many years, partially dismantled between racing seasons. The fuel tank, seat, exhaust system, carburetors, and various other components had been removed.

Unfortunately, our friend had never gotten around to reassembling it.

When the motorcycle arrived at Kaplan Cycles, we undertook an extensive mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment, preserving its original racing character while bringing its components back to life.

We made a conscious decision to preserve the original racing paint on the fiberglass fuel tank because it tells the story of this remarkable machine.

The faded finish, hand-painted details, and vintage racing patina are part of its history. Our restoration specialist, John Lee, carefully recreated the original pinstriping to the best of his ability while retaining the paintwork that had accompanied the motorcycle throughout its racing career.

Our friend actually commented that the motorcycle looked better than it had during its racing days, thanks to the polished aluminum, refinished components, and extensive attention to detail.

368cc Big-Bore Racing Engine – Built for Performance

At the heart of this extraordinary machine is a heavily modified Honda 350 twin-cylinder engine, reportedly enlarged to approximately 368cc with racing pistons, cylinder-head modifications, and performance upgrades.

The engine was built for one purpose: producing serious power in a lightweight racing chassis.

Performance modifications include:

  • 368cc big-bore engine configuration

  • Oversized racing pistons

  • Modified high-performance cylinder head

  • Large-bore performance racing carburetors

  • Custom two-into-one racing exhaust system

  • Deleted electric starter system

  • Deleted factory charging system

  • Lightweight racing ignition/rotating assembly configuration

  • Reduced rotating mass for exceptionally fast throttle response

  • Vintage competition engine modifications

The original racing tank once wore a hand-painted "368" designation, identifying the engine's increased displacement. Although that marking could not be preserved during our refurbishment, the motorcycle retains its racing heritage and original appearance.

With its lightweight rotating assembly and extensive engine modifications, this Honda was an incredibly responsive machine.

When we had it running and riding, it revved with the kind of urgency that made these vintage Honda twins such formidable competitors against much larger-displacement motorcycles.

This was a true giant killer in its day!

Extensive Period-Correct Racing Upgrades

This motorcycle features an exceptional collection of vintage racing components, many of which would be extremely expensive and difficult to duplicate today.

Custom Fiberglass Café Racer Fuel Tank

Beautiful vintage fiberglass racing tank retaining its original competition-era paintwork, complemented by carefully restored pinstriping and replacement decals.

Vintage Solo Racing Seat

Period-style solo café racer saddle retaining its original upholstery, which remains in good condition.

Tommaselli Racing Handlebars

Authentic vintage Tommaselli racing handlebars, a premium performance upgrade during the era when this motorcycle was competing.

Custom Racing Headlight Assembly

Modified headlight with custom mounting brackets, giving the motorcycle its distinctive period café racer appearance.

Modified Front Suspension

The front forks have been rebuilt with new fork seals and upgraded heavy-duty springs. The aluminum fork lowers were professionally polished during the refurbishment.

Upgraded Front Disc Brake System

One of the most impressive modifications on this motorcycle is its custom front disc brake assembly.

The original arrangement was extensively modified, incorporating an upgraded disc brake system with a relocated trailing caliper position, similar in principle to the arrangement found on modern sport motorcycles.

The brake master cylinder and caliper were rebuilt during our restoration work.

The result is a fascinating example of the innovative racing modifications enthusiasts performed long before modern sport-bike technology became commonplace.

Lightweight Aluminum Racing Wheels

The motorcycle is equipped with lightweight aluminum rims, heavy-duty spokes, and wider-than-stock wheel dimensions, allowing the use of larger racing tires and providing increased rigidity.

These wheels are a major period-correct performance upgrade and an important part of the motorcycle's authentic racing appearance.

Upgraded Performance Rear Shocks

Period performance rear suspension complements the rebuilt front forks, creating a chassis designed for high-speed cornering and road-racing performance.

Custom Rearset Foot Controls

Racing-style rearset footpegs and controls provide the aggressive riding position expected of a competition café racer.

Custom Two-Into-One Exhaust

Vintage performance exhaust system specifically suited to the motorcycle's racing engine configuration.

Refurbished Rear Brakes

The rear braking system was serviced and refurbished as part of our restoration process.

Polished Aluminum Components

The engine cases, fork lowers, and numerous other aluminum components were carefully polished, significantly improving the motorcycle's appearance while preserving its original vintage racing identity.

Approximately $13,500 Invested in Professional Restoration Work

Our team at Kaplan Cycles invested an extraordinary amount of time and effort in bringing this special motorcycle back to life.

Restoration Investment:

Work Performed

Investment

Professional mechanical shop labor – 45 hours

$6,750

Professional detailing and cosmetic labor – 35 hours

$5,250

$1,500

Total Labor and Parts Investment

$13,500

This does not include the cost of acquiring the motorcycle, bringing our total investment to approximately $15,000.

The restoration included extensive mechanical reassembly, carburetor work, front suspension rebuilding, brake-system rebuilding, polishing, cosmetic refurbishment, electrical work, and countless hours of careful attention to detail.

There is simply no practical way to duplicate the amount of professional labor and vintage racing hardware represented here for anything close to our investment.

Important Mechanical Disclosure – Engine Repair Required

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: THIS MOTORCYCLE IS BEING SOLD AS-IS, WITH A NON-RUNNING ENGINE THAT REQUIRES REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT.

Following our extensive refurbishment, we successfully got the motorcycle running and riding.

During a subsequent test session, the camshaft drive fastener reportedly sheared, causing the camshaft to stop rotating while the engine continued turning.

This resulted in an internal engine failure.

The motorcycle has remained in our shop since that incident, approximately two years, while we focused on other restoration projects.

Our technicians believe the damage may primarily involve the cylinder head, camshaft, valves, and related top-end components. However, the engine has not been fully disassembled and inspected to determine the complete extent of the damage.

Potential repairs may include cylinder-head replacement or rebuilding, camshaft and valve inspection, piston inspection, and replacement of any additional damaged components.

The bottom end appeared serviceable prior to the failure, but its present condition has not been verified.

Alternatively, a buyer could source a replacement Honda 350 donor engine and utilize the many valuable performance components already fitted to this motorcycle.

The large-bore racing carburetors, custom exhaust, specialty racing chassis components, lightweight wheels, upgraded suspension, and numerous other modifications are already present.

The motorcycle is being sold as a project, and the successful bidder should anticipate performing substantial engine work before operating it.

The tires have not been replaced and should also be inspected and replaced as necessary before use.

Electrical System

The motorcycle retains functional headlight and taillight circuits that were checked during our refurbishment.

The lighting operates through a manually switched electrical system.

Please note that the factory charging system was removed as part of the bike's racing modifications. The motorcycle currently relies on battery power and does not have an operating onboard charging system.

A knowledgeable restorer could potentially reinstall suitable charging components and adapt the wiring if street use is desired.

The electrical system should be inspected and verified before the motorcycle is returned to service.

An Authentic Piece of Motorcycle Racing History

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Honda's lightweight twin-cylinder machines developed a reputation as some of the most competitive and adaptable small-displacement motorcycles in the world.

Their rev-happy engines, lightweight chassis, and enormous aftermarket support made them favorites among privateer road racers.

These motorcycles could embarrass much larger European machines on tight circuits, thanks to their excellent handling, high-revving engines, and talented riders.

This particular machine represents that remarkable era.

It wasn't built to sit in a showroom.

It was built to race.

It competed at Loudon, was modified and developed over many years, and carries the unmistakable appearance of a motorcycle that earned its place in vintage racing history.

The fiberglass café racer tank, hand-finished paintwork, vintage racing wheels, upgraded braking system, rearsets, racing exhaust, and modified engine all tell the story of an enthusiast who was passionate about making his Honda faster and better.

Why Are We Selling It?

This motorcycle means a great deal to us personally.

We made a promise to our friend that we would restore it, and we went to extraordinary lengths to honor that commitment.

We accomplished much of what we set out to do, including getting the motorcycle running and riding again while he was still alive.

Unfortunately, following the engine failure, the motorcycle was placed in our restoration queue while we attended to other projects.

Today, Kaplan Cycles and the New England Motorcycle Museum have an enormous backlog of vintage motorcycles awaiting restoration.

With additional collections arriving, we have made the difficult decision to release approximately 30 classic motorcycles as-is rather than allow them to sit for several more years.

This Honda is among them.

We recognize that we will not recover our approximately $15,000 investment in this motorcycle, but we would much rather see it go to a dedicated enthusiast who will appreciate its history and complete the restoration.

Parting out the motorcycle could potentially yield substantial value because of its many unusual vintage racing components.

However, we have no intention of dismantling it.

This machine deserves to remain together, retaining the character and identity it developed over decades of racing.

An Exceptional Opportunity for the Right Enthusiast

Whether you are an experienced vintage Honda mechanic, a collector of period café racers, a historic motorcycle racing enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates authentic competition machinery, this Honda offers a remarkable foundation.

Finding and assembling these specialized racing components individually would be a costly and time-consuming undertaking.

Here, much of that work has already been done.

With the right mechanical attention, this historic Honda could once again become an outstanding vintage café racer, a competition-inspired restoration, or a centerpiece in a collection of classic Japanese racing motorcycles.

Its value extends beyond the collection of parts.

This bike has a history.

It has a story.

And it represents the passion of a dedicated racer who spent decades enjoying and developing it.

We hope its next owner will finish what we started and put this extraordinary machine back on the road or racetrack where it belongs.

You don’t just win an auction — YOU are creating & helping to preserve motorcycle history, and you become part of our family, a Kaplan Cycles client for life.

We do not take new clients off the street.
We do not service bikes purchased elsewhere.
We only take new exclusive clients who purchase a motorcycle from us.

You get a guided purchase experience with, and from, the experts who care about the bike as much as you do. If there’s a problem, you don’t get ghosted. You call us — you will have our cell phone numbers — we will answer your call on weekends, and we will help make it right.

Auction platforms = listing only. No support. No accountability.

Kaplan Cycles = we stand behind what we sell.

You are buying museum-curated provenance. That means:
• expert evaluation
• documented condition
• professional presentation
• long-term preservation mindset

You’re not just buying a motorcycle — you’re buying a curated piece of motorcycling history.

From the #1 family in this business — Kaplan Cycles & the New England Motorcycle Museum.

Sincerely,

Ken Kaplan Sr.

It is important you have at least a basic mechanical knowledge before purchasing and operating a classic motorcycle.
