Up for sale is one of the most historically significant superbikes ever built:
the first-year slab-side GSX-R 1100 that changed the motorcycle world overnight.
This was Suzuki’s original open-class race bike for the street — the machine many enthusiasts consider one of the first true modern liter-class superbikes. Before the GSX-R1100, big-bore sport bikes were generally heavy steel-framed machines. Suzuki took the lightweight GSX-R750 concept, installed a massive 1052cc oil-cooled engine, wrapped it in endurance-racer bodywork, and created a street-legal missile.
For 1986, this bike was outrageous: approximately 130 horsepower, about 437 lbs dry, 10-second quarter-mile capability, and a top speed approaching 160 mph. These bikes earned their reputation as “Widowmakers” for good reason.
This example is the one to have:
First-year 1986 model. Blue and white iconic colorway. Matching numbers. Original cycle parts. Original Suzuki header. Period-correct Yoshimura RS3 silencer. Never raced. Never tracked.
A Two-Year Kaplan Cycles Labor-of-Love Restoration
This GSX-R came from a friend in New York who had owned it since he was young. His health was not great, and he wanted to see the bike brought back properly. I promised him I would take it to the finish line.
What followed became the most labor-intensive motorcycle restoration we have ever completed.
We invested approximately:
-
490 total restoration labor hours
-
290 hours of mechanical and chassis restoration
-
200 hours in paint and bodywork alone
-
$73,500 in labor at $150/hr
-
Approximately $3,000+ in parts
-
Nearly $76,500 equivalent restoration investment plus the cost of the bike!
-
The Bike is a steal ~ at the buy it now price we cannot duplicate this quality
This is not a “lipstick on a pig” restoration. The bike was stripped down to the frame and engine cradle, and every visible component was restored, rebuilt, refinished, polished, serviced, replaced, or corrected as needed.
Mechanical Restoration
The mechanical restoration was handled by Jeff Castine, “The Manic Mechanic,” one of the best Suzuki four-cylinder tuners in the Northeast. Jeff has built countless GSX-R engines and championship-winning race motors over the years.
Work included:
-

Rack split, cleaned, serviced, and tuned
-
K&N filters installed
-
Tuned to the Yoshimura RS3 exhaust

-

-
OEM Suzuki header retained
-
Period-correct Yoshimura RS3 silencer restored and polished

The bike runs exactly like an oil-cooled GSX-R1100 should: huge torque, violent top-end pull, deep intake roar through the Mikunis and K&Ns, and that unmistakable oil-cooled GSX-R howl.

Paint & Bodywork — 200 Hours
The paintwork was handled by Dean Sullivan, one of our most detail-oriented restoration experts. This became the last major project Dean completed for us before semi-retirement, and he absolutely knocked it out of the park.
We had been collecting original GSX-R slabside bodywork for years. For this build, we selected the best original OEM Suzuki body panels from our collection. No aftermarket bodywork was used.
The bodywork includes:
-
15 original OEM Suzuki body panels
-
35 individual reproduction graphics
-
High-end Matrix paint products
-
Pearl white, dark blue, and sky blue tri-color finish
-
Two coats epoxy primer
-
Two coats high-build primer
-
Pearl white tri-coat base
-
Graphics applied with extreme precision
-
Multiple rounds of clear coat
-
Inside and outside of fairings refinished
-
Original bodywork professionally repaired where needed
The pearl white sections received approximately 10 total coats. The blue sections received approximately 9 total coats. The graphics are cleared over, giving the bike a deep, smooth, show-quality finish that is better than factory while preserving the correct original look.
This paint job alone would cost well north of $10,000 to recreate — if you could even find a shop willing to take it on. Realistically, at 200 hours, it is not economically sensible. It was done because this bike deserved it.
Why This Bike Matters
The 1986 GSX-R1100 created the modern open-class superbike category. It brought race-replica styling, light weight, aluminum-frame construction, full aerodynamic bodywork, and massive horsepower together in a way the world had not seen before.
This bike helped launch the lightweight performance arms race that eventually led to machines like the Honda Fireblade, Yamaha R1, GSX-R1000, and modern superbikes as we know them.
The slabside fairings, twin round headlights, analog gauges, endurance-racer styling, 18-inch wheels, aluminum frame, long gearing, and mechanical rawness make this one of the most iconic motorcycles of the 1980s.
There is no ride-by-wire.
No ABS.
No traction control.
No electronic safety net.
Just you, the engine, the throttle, and the road.
Personal History
I worked at a Suzuki dealership in 1986. I uncrated these bikes when they were brand new and got to ride them straight out of the crate. At 21 years old, racing dirt bikes and riding CR500s, the GSX-R1100 was a dream machine. I could not afford one back then, but I never forgot what they felt like.
Compared to the big superbikes that came before it, this bike was light years ahead. Compared even to modern machines, it still feels alive, mechanical, raw, and incredibly special.
Final Word
We have restored more motorcycles than almost anyone in the country, and this is the most time-intensive motorcycle restoration we have ever done.
This is not just a motorcycle. It is a piece of superbike history, a work of art, and a true first-year blue-and-white GSX-R1100 restored to a level that would be nearly impossible to duplicate today.
There may be other 1986 GSX-R1100s in private collections, but there is not another one like this publicly available in this condition with this level of documented restoration investment.
If you want one of Suzuki’s greatest motorcycles ever built — the original open-class slabside superbike — this is the one.
God bless America.
