Feast your eyes on an ultra-rare blast from the past — a highly collectible first-year 1979 Suzuki RM60 motocross machine. This is not a kids’ trail bike. The RM60 was a true miniature race weapon built by Suzuki during the golden era of motocross, and finding one today is nearly impossible… finding one in this condition is unheard of.

In all our years restoring and selling vintage motocross motorcycles, this is the very first RM60 we’ve ever had our hands on. We honestly cannot remember seeing another survivor this original and this clean anywhere in the Northeast.

The Story

This bike was reportedly purchased brand new for little Johnny as his first dirt bike. Problem was… the thing absolutely terrified him. Mom wasn’t exactly thrilled either, so after only a handful of rides around the grass, the bike was parked away and stored for roughly 40 years.

When we acquired the bike and pulled the top end apart for inspection, we were blown away:

  • Original piston and rings still installed

  • Factory crosshatching still visible in the cylinder

  • Virtually zero carbon buildup

  • No signs of racing or abuse whatsoever

This motorcycle legitimately appears to have less than five total hours of ride time since new.

Mechanical Restoration & Service

The engine was already in exceptional original condition, so our goal was preservation rather than replacement.

Services completed include:

  • Top-end inspection and fresh gaskets installed

  • New base gasket

  • New head gasket

  • Combustion chamber cleaned

  • Carburetor professionally cleaned and rebuilt

  • New intake boot installed

  • New air filter

  • New fuel petcock

  • Fuel tank professionally cleaned internally

  • Fresh VP race fuel added

  • New fuel lines

  • New carb drain lines

  • Fresh gear oil

  • Front brake serviced

The bike fires right up and runs absolutely beautifully.

The original engine remains intact right down to the factory piston and rings.

Cosmetic Restoration

This RM60 retains its incredibly rare original core components including:

  • Original engine

  • Original wheels

  • Original rims

  • Original sprockets

  • Original shifter

  • Original handlebars

  • Original exhaust system

  • Original seat cover

The seat cover is still in mint condition and even retains the original rear grab strap.

The original exhaust is absolutely stunning — no rust, no rot, and unbelievably, not a single ding in the front pipe. Proof positive this bike was never raced or crashed.

Restoration & Repainting work completed includes:

  • Engine cases refinished

  • Fork lowers refinished

  • Frame cradle refinished

  • Brake lever refinished

  • Foot pegs refinished

  • Swingarm refinished

  • Exhaust professionally coated in correct semi-gloss/flat black finish

Additional upgrades and restoration items include:

  • Brand new Dunlop tires front and rear

  • New tubes

  • New gold chain

  • New front fender

  • New rear fender

  • New front number plate

  • New side number plates

  • New Custom graphics by Christy Staiger Designs

The previous owner had already refinished the fuel tank, and because it still looked pretty good, we chose to preserve it rather than disturb it.

Condition

The chrome on this motorcycle is astonishing.

There is virtually no pitting anywhere. The front wheel chrome looks almost new, and the original rims still display their December 1978 date codes.

This motorcycle presents more like a preserved museum display piece than a used motocross bike.

Highlights

  • First-year RM60

  • VIN: RM60-101387

  • Early production example

  • Extremely low hours

  • Original engine internals

  • Original exhaust

  • Original handlebars

  • Museum-quality survivor

  • 6-speed transmission

  • Mechanically excellent

  • Ready for vintage mini racing or display

This thing absolutely rips. Even with a 225-pound adult riding it, the bike still shifts flawlessly and pulls hard. Imagine what it must have felt like with a 60-pound kid on board in 1979 — the power-to-weight ratio must have been insane.

If you are a serious Suzuki collector and already own the big RM models, your collection simply is not complete without an RM60. Opportunities to own one this original and this clean may never come around again.
