Feast your eyes on one of the most historically significant superbikes ever built — this stunning 1978 Suzuki GS1000C. If you know your superbike history, then you already know what this machine represents. This was the motorcycle that helped launch Suzuki into total superbike dominance. When Pops Yoshimura got his hands on the GS1000 platform and paired it with Wes Cooley, the result was legendary: Daytona 200 victories, AMA Superbike Championships, Suzuka 8-Hour wins, and one of the most dominant runs in superbike racing history.
The GS1000 changed everything.
Suzuki took the lighter, better-handling GS750 chassis and stuffed a fire-breathing 997cc DOHC inline-four into it. The result was a motorcycle that flat-out outperformed the competition. Faster and better handling than the Kawasaki Z1, smoother and more refined than the XS1100, the GS1000 quickly became the benchmark for what a superbike should be.
Right out of the crate these bikes were capable of over 135 MPH at Daytona and quarter-mile times deep into the 10-second range — serious performance in 1978.
And here’s the part that makes THIS bike so special:
This GS1000C remains remarkably original.
Most of these bikes were modified, raced, drag raced, café converted, or hot-rodded with Kerker 4-into-1 exhausts, smoothbore carbs, pod filters, and chopped airboxes. Finding one today with its original exhaust system, original airbox, original paint, original wheels, original finishes, and matching numbers drivetrain is almost impossible.
This bike came from a longtime private collector in upstate New York. I had been speaking with him for nearly five years before he finally agreed to sell it. It had been sitting in his climate-controlled collection for many years and was already an incredibly preserved machine before we invested heavily into what can only be described as a full preservation restoration.
The result is one of the finest original GS1000C models we’ve ever seen.
With only 15,926 original miles, this bike looks, runs, rides, and presents at an extraordinarily high level.
The original factory blue paint has been professionally wet sanded, paint-corrected, buffed, polished, and sealed while preserving the original factory gold and blue graphics and original Suzuki tank badges. The finish is absolutely spectacular.
The original cycle parts are equally impressive. The frame, swingarm, chain guard, exhaust system, wheels, spokes, fenders, and hardware are all exceptionally well preserved. Even the original warning labels remain intact.
This is the lightweight aluminum spoke-wheel GS1000C version featuring the single front disc setup — widely considered one of the lightest and best-handling variants of the early GS1000 lineup.
And unlike many motorcycles from this era, this bike is incredibly stable at speed. The GS1000 was famous for its superior chassis and suspension design. Even today, the bike feels rock solid at highway speeds. It pulls like a freight train, runs incredibly smooth, and delivers the kind of mechanical feel only a properly sorted vintage superbike can provide.

The polished aluminum engine covers alone required an enormous amount of labor. The factory clear coat was carefully removed and the covers were hand sanded and polished through a multi-stage process until they looked better than new. The same level of attention was given throughout the entire motorcycle.
The underside of the engine is as clean as the top side.
No oil leaks.
No head gasket leaks.
No base gasket leaks.
No signs of abuse.
The original exhaust system is in beautiful condition with no evidence of scraping or damage, and the headers show excellent coloration — clear evidence the carburetion has always been properly maintained.
Condition
Simply put, this is one of the nicest original GS1000C models we’ve encountered in decades.
These motorcycles were usually raced, modified, or destroyed. Finding a collector-owned, matching-numbers example in this condition is extraordinarily rare. Finding one that has also received this level of professional preservation work is nearly impossible.
The only notable cosmetic flaw is a very small crack near the rear grab bar area of the seat — a common issue on these models caused by owners lifting the bike improperly using the rear bar instead of the hidden factory grab point beneath the seat. It is extremely minor and barely noticeable unless specifically pointed out.
