Feast your eyes on this absolutely stunning Class of 1974 1974 Yamaha TY250 — one of the most iconic and collectible vintage trials motorcycles ever built. Designed by legendary World Trials Champion Mick Andrews, the TY250 changed the game in the 1970s and remains one of the most respected classic trials bikes ever produced.
This particular machine is an extraordinarily well-preserved original-paint example from the famed Roy Thacker Collection of Texas. Roy owned Tisco Racing and assembled an incredible collection of mechanically excellent classic motorcycles over the years. Out of the many TY250s we’ve had through Kaplan Cycles, this is the very first one we’ve seen retaining this level of originality — including the original paint, original handlebars, original gray factory cables, original switchgear, original tires, original skid plate, and even the original DID wheel decal still intact.
This bike was recently ridden and evaluated by our resident trials expert Bill Blythe, the 2024 New England Trials Association 50+ Champion, who described it as one of the finest original TY250s he’s ever seen.
If you know vintage trials bikes, you understand how rare it is to find one that hasn’t been hammered in competition. The original details on this motorcycle tell the story:
-
Original gray Yamaha cables still intact
-
Original steel handlebars perfectly straight
-
Original switchgear and cable guides present
-
Original plastic skid plate with virtually no damage
-
Original Japanese Dunlop tires with 1973 date codes
-
Original paint with authentic age patina
-
Original black carburetor finish intact
-
Original aluminum chain guard in exceptional condition
This bike clearly lived an easy life and was preserved instead of abused.
We Just Invested $8,797.00 in a Full Rotisserie Detail and Restoration

Why the TY250 Matters
The TY250 wasn’t just another trail bike. When Mick Andrews began competing on this model in world competition, it immediately became one of the most dominant and capable trials motorcycles available. Even today, these bikes remain competitive in vintage trials competition.
Unlike modern trials bikes, the TY250 retains a more comfortable seating position and can actually be trail-ridden comfortably. It’s equally at home:
-
In a vintage motorcycle collection
-
At a classic trials event
-
On a campground trail ride
-
Displayed in a museum
-
Or simply admired in your garage
As motocross legend John Dowd once said:
“You’ve got to go slower to learn how to go faster.”
Trials riding is not only incredibly fun — it’s also one of the best forms of motorcycle skill training and a fantastic low-impact workout.
Condition Summary

-
