1973 HONDA CR250M ELSINORE

Frame-Off Restoration By Kaplan Cycles

Original Matching Numbers Classic

New DG Exhaust

One of the most important and influential motocross Bikes ever produced.

When Honda introduced the CR250M in 1973, it changed motocross virtually overnight. Lightweight, powerful, reliable, and affordable, the Elsinore gave everyday riders the opportunity to purchase a competition-ready motorcycle from their Honda dealer and race at a serious level.

Weighing 212 pounds and producing 34 horsepower, the CR250M offered an exceptional power-to-weight ratio for its era. Its durable two-stroke engine, precise handling, and straightforward mechanical design helped usher in a new generation of Japanese motocross machines.

The original retail price was approximately $1,145—a remarkable value for a motorcycle capable of competing at the highest levels of motocross. More than five decades later, the first-year Elsinore remains one of the most recognizable and collectible vintage motocross motorcycles ever built.

This motorcycle received a comprehensive, frame-off restoration here at Kaplan Cycles.

The project took approximately two years to complete while the correct components, finishes, and specialty services were sourced.

70 hours of professional shop labor were invested in the restoration:

  • 35 hours of mechanical and workshop labor

  • Plus 35 hours of detailing, refinishing, and paint preparation

$10,500 in restoration labor, Plus over $2,000 in parts, and $750 in professional paint and graphics work were invested in the motorcycle. Including its acquisition and transportation, our total investment exceeds $16,000.

The result is a beautiful, mechanically & cosmetically restored, matching numbers highly original first-year Elsinore suitable for museum display, a serious private collection, vintage shows, or carefully enjoyed AHRMA-style vintage racing.

History and Provenance

We acquired this motorcycle as part of a remarkable 49-motorcycle collection purchased from a longtime friend who lived near Unadilla.

The motorcycle was a complete and worthy restoration candidate when it arrived. It had previously been prepared and ridden at Unadilla, but it retained its original frame, engine cases, wheels, suspension components, bodywork, and many other difficult-to-find factory parts.

Sadly, our friend passed away approximately three months after we acquired the collection. He entrusted this motorcycle to us because he knew we would properly preserve and restore this important example.

This CR250M was one of the final motorcycles from that collection to be completed.

We are proud of the finished result and believe it honors both the motorcycle’s history and the memory of its former owner.

A Landmark Motorcycle

The 1973 CR250M was Honda’s first true production two-stroke motocross bike. Its impact was so significant that the model was featured on the cover of American Motorcyclist magazine for its 50th anniversary.

The Elsinore arrived during an extraordinary period in American motorcycling. Following the popularity of On Any Sunday, interest in off-road riding and motocross exploded across the country. Riders could purchase a relatively inexpensive motorcycle, a helmet, boots, and riding gear and begin competing.

The CR250M was light, fast, reliable, easy to maintain, and supported by an enormous aftermarket. Its simple two-stroke engine could be serviced by an experienced owner using basic tools, helping make serious motocross competition accessible to a much wider audience.

Most examples were raced hard, modified repeatedly, damaged, discarded, or simply worn out. Complete, highly original, properly restored examples are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

This motorcycle would be an excellent addition to a serious Honda collection or A vintage motocross collection

Financing options are available to qualified buyers.

We consider trades, especially classic, vintage, collectible, and investment-grade motorcycles.

We can assist with enclosed motorcycle transportation throughout the continental United States and may also assist international buyers with transportation to their preferred freight forwarder.

The motorcycle may remain on display at the New England Motorcycle Museum, should the new owner wish to have it exhibited here.

Important Purchase Information

This is a 53-year-old vintage competition motorcycle that has been restored to a very high standard. Minor cosmetic imperfections, age-related patina, and evidence of original components should be expected and are part of its authenticity.
