Up for auction is an absolutely stunning and historically significant 1973 Rokon 340 Automatic, powered by the legendary Sachs big-bore two-stroke automatic transmission engine. This is not just another vintage dirt bike — this is a rare, investment-grade piece of American moto history that helped change off-road motorcycle engineering forever.
A Revolutionary Motorcycle
The Rokon 340 Automatic was far ahead of its time. Powered by the rugged Sachs pull-start snowmobile engine, this machine was built around an engine originally designed to run long-distance, high-RPM endurance conditions across frozen lakes for hours at a time. The engine was so powerful in stock form that Rokon actually detuned it for motorcycle use.
Producing just under 40 horsepower, the performance was nothing short of explosive for the era. In fact, Rokon proved the platform’s capability on the racetrack, earning an impressive 5th-place finish in AMA National Championship flat-track competition using this same engine platform.
This motorcycle also pioneered several industry-first innovations:
-
One of the first dirt bikes ever equipped with mag wheels
-
One of the first off-road motorcycles to feature disc brakes
-
Heavy-duty competition-grade chassis engineering
-
High-end B-Torque suspension forks
-
Factory dual exhaust system
These bikes were revolutionary in the early 1970s and remain among the most collectible vintage off-road motorcycles today.
Museum-Quality Restoration
This particular Rokon comes from the personal collection of Jeff at Freedom Cycle, who had five Rokons displayed in our motorcycle museum since 2018. The two-wheel-drive models from the collection have already sold, making this the final bike from the collection available to the public.
Jeff performed a complete frame-up, nut-and-bolt restoration with approximately:
-
70 hours of professional labor
-
Over $2,500 in parts alone
At current professional restoration rates, this represents well over a $13,000 restoration investment before even factoring in the cost of sourcing a quality original core motorcycle.
The restoration included:
-
Complete disassembly to the bare frame
-
Professionally refinished frame and wheels
-
New fenders
-
New paintwork
-
New seat cover
-
Restored and refinished original cycle components
-
Complete crank-up engine rebuild
-
Cosmetic restoration throughout
The bike presents beautifully and runs exceptionally strong.
Recently Serviced & Ready to Ride
Although the motorcycle had been sitting on museum display for a period of time, we recently put it through our shop to ensure it was mechanically dialed in.
Recent service includes:
-
Fuel tank cleaned and flushed
-
New fuel line installed
-
Carburetor cleaned and serviced
-
Airbox serviced with fresh oil
-
Bike fully tested and fired up
The engine starts easily and runs incredibly strong. This motorcycle is FAST and an absolute blast to ride.
Investment-Grade Collectible
Vintage Rokons are skyrocketing in value, especially properly restored examples like this one. Recent restored auction sales have reportedly brought:
-
Approximately $17,600
-
Approximately $13,000
Even rough non-running project bikes regularly trade in the $3,000–$5,000 range.
Finding an authentic, professionally restored example of this caliber is becoming extremely difficult.
Whether you are:
-
A serious collector
-
A vintage racing enthusiast
-
A museum curator
-
Or simply someone who appreciates rare and historically important motorcycles
…this Rokon deserves your attention.
